Ignition swap

Postby Remps » Wed Jan 31, 2018 7:31 am

Lost the darn keys to my W250. What would be a better ignition donor, an 86 gas 1/2 ton, or a 93 diesel? Would it be easier to swap the whole steering column vs just the ignition? My 86 is an auto with tilt, the w250 doesn't have tilt steering.

Both should be the same, an ignition is always easier to swap than a column, silly kids! ;)

Just enough power to break everything behind the crankshaft.

It's cheaper and easier to call a lock smith out to cut a new key for it.

I don't know about cheaper, sure does sound easier and faster though. I'd rather spend my time changing the headgasket than playing with the stupid key. (That lost it's owner, it's the keys fault, see?)

I don't know about cheaper either, I think having them come out to cut a key is close to $100 here.

Maybe you need to invest in some of those things, a "tile"? You put it on your keys or whatever you lose often, and you can find it with your smartphone. ;)

I guess the next warm day I make it to the farm I will swap ignitions from the 86. And it is parked where the snow drifts over the hood. Yay. As if shovelling a 200 yd path for the 90 isn't enough. At least it's only in about 2 ft of snow.

Dam it was $25 last time I had them come out and cut one for me. If the door lock is the same key pull it out and take it to have a key cut.
