Nitrile/buna vs viton

Postby spencerdiesel » Sat Feb 10, 2018 8:18 am

What type of seals material-wise are used in our trucks fuel systems from the factory? I'm finally beginning to get my WMO setup going and using gas containing percentages of ethanol for a thinning agent has me wondering about what material the seals are made of?

Based on some brief research, viton would be most desirable in exposure to almost anything, but viton is expensive and I doubt they are used in the factory fuel systems?

There is eth free gas in my area, but it is mostly 90 octane or higher. Lower octane is more desireable for WMO thinning.

May have to contact Bosch on that one.

I wouldnt worry about what octane you are thinning with.

I will probably stray away from wmo myself, when I pulled injectors after less than 5k there was a LOT of carbon buildup. Made me uncomfortable.

About how much wmo did you run? How did you filter it?

I didn't pay much attention but probably only 1-2k miles worth. If that.

Other factors may have contributed to the carbon buildup though. Broken plunger return spring in pump causing crappy hazy idle, 6x13 injectors plowing in the winter(probably not ideal for idling around my driveway)

WMO has been a mix of new and used, 10w hyd, 30wt trans, 15w40 filtered through Cat 1r0749

WMO is better off in a small/stock injector truck imo.

I have a pressure driven 65 gph centrifuge that I'll be running the oil through, with spin on filters 50 to 20 micron ahead of the centrifuge, and 5 & 1 micron absolute after the centrifuge.

That makes sense about a larger injectored VE not playing as well with oil, as oil is much more resistant to being broke up into said mist.

Another factor to consider in what sticks to get when the time comes, because i probably won't want to stop running oil if I have moderate success with it.

Did you thin your wmo with a solvent (gas, kero) or just mix with diesel?

Just mixed with diesel.

After running the fresh engine/pump I think the blame lands more on the broken plunger spring.

It now idles MUCH cleaner.

I'll still run wmo just a lesser dose.

That's good to hear, and a lot of people it seems dont run their trucks hard enough to keep the coking down. I know even on pure diesel if i go 500 miles or so with no WOT, the next time I stand in it I can't see anything behind me.

If you blend with a solvent that is thinner than diesel, you can bring the viscosity of the oil closer to that of diesel.

What causes the springs to break in these pumps? Is it a job to replace them or not too bad?

I'd say the springs break mainly because of fatigue, probably accelerated from turning higher RPM after 300k stock miles.

The kit I used was "HD" springs, believe they're for higher rpm applications

Not hard at all to replace, in fact the whole pump is simple to refresh as long as you take your time and set everything out in order/follow a writeup.

The rollers will dump out on the floor if the pump isn't tilted back slightly when removing the head
