3.4 Tacoma missing again

Postby spencerdiesel » Sun Apr 01, 2018 4:01 pm

My '97 yoter w/ 263k was missing under heavy throttle up until about 5k miles ago when I put new plugs (dual electrode, as these motors are supposedly only supposed to have dual) in it. The miss has been completely gone until today, it started missing at full throttle again.

These motors are bad for eating plugs about every 25-30k, and I was certain it fixed the prob when I changed them 5k ago, so I'm curious as to why it misses now exactly as it did before the plugs fixed it.

Anyone have reccomendations before I pull plugs? Not to well off in gas engines. Thanks y'all

That should be the 3.4 engine with three coils and 3wires. O'Reilly auto has a parts line called import direct, and in that part line they have a coil boot and ign wire set for that engine. Buy one and replace the ones on the engine.
Also......make certain the valve covers are tight and the plug tubes are not pudding oil inside. This will cause the plugs to carbon track.....leach the fire from wire/boot to ground. Electricity follows path of least resistance.

Also.......I've mechaniced a long time and on more than my share of these,t belts/tune ups. I am not familiar with the spark plug eating thing. First I've heard of it in fact. When they miss......there's a reason for it......other than just plugs

Thanks Ellis! The valve covers never crossed my mind but I will definitely be checking them.

The plug eating I read from some taco forums, I don't know that for a fact though.

I've got everything ready to do the timing belt & water pump on this truck, do you have any reccomendations when I do it? The local dealership quoted me 4 hours, I feel like it will be all day at the least doing it myself

There are a few things I'd do when doing all the maintenance. I'd remove the upper intake/plenum,do the valve covers and while there, there are cam bore plugs in the rear that are retained by what resembles a cam bearing cap. Remove those, clean with carb/brake cleaner, coat the sealing edge with ultra grey and reassemble. They leak bad....let oil soak your exhaust and rack&pinion bushings........swelling the bushings and stinking when burning oil off the exhaust.

I'd eyeball the cam seals and crank seal hard. If they're seeping, replace them. It's cheaper to do all this one Time, rather than twice.
Regardless if it's good or not....replace the hydraulic Tbelt tensioner. Again cheaper to do it once lol

Other than that.......nothing lol

I think if I owned a Tacoma, I'd be glad if it turns up missing. ;)

I could make it go missing for him........probably would not stay with me long if it 4x4. Those things sell like mad down here. Every redneck wants a 4x4 Tacoma and is willing to PAY! Lol

Ellis take it, this truck is cursed only with me :) during the time my fiancees Dad owned it, I borrowed it 6 times. 4 of those times I had an incident with the truck.

We charged the AC at school, and actually had the pressures on the lower end of spec. That afternoon the truck dumped all the refrigerant from somewhere in the evaporator.
Another time I drove it his $500 CB radio took a crap right after I brought it back to him. I never touched it.
Next time I decided I would plow the right quarter panel into a pile of steel crates at my work place.
The driver side window crank was always flakey, but it stripped completely the last time I borrowed it.

I bought the truck from him and it still gives me the special finger.

I don't abuse other peoples stuff, but it sure looks like I do
