2nd Gen Dually Adaptors on 1st Gen Axle

Postby matthewh » Sat Apr 14, 2018 10:46 pm

Did alittle Googling, and only found 1 reference to using 2nd gen adaptor's on a 1st gen axle.

I realize the adaptors would need to be machined to clear the lockout hub, but wonder if they still would have the strength to be proper adaptors.

The reason for this idea, is being able to upgrade to gen 3 brake calipers and rotors. For those who don't know, the rotor slips over the hub/lug studs, vs being held in by the lug studs. Hence not being able upgrade a dually.

Couple different options,
* Run srw hubs, and machine 2nd gen spacers,
* Run srw hubs and billet spacers
Both options still allow dually wheels, so only need 1 spare, and can rotate as nessicary, vs just running srw hubs and needing 2 spares.

Truck needs new front brakes anyways, thought it would be a good time to upgrade if possible. Always been kinda disappointed in the stopping ability when loaded, and haven't found much in the way of aftermarket performance pads/rotors

Did you get this figured out? I am open to keeping my existing axles if possible.

I am considering swapping to later axles to escape the "coined" rims and also to upgrade my brakes.

No not yet. Been so busy, and it not being a priority, it's slow going. Still looking for a set of cheap hub adapters to play with and see if they will work

I'll be following your progress.

I have DRW and looking at getting away from the stock 16" wheels, want to run something newer
I read i can upgrade the rear studs to 9/16 and change the front to K30 hubs
but haven't figured out the coined part of the wheel and how to deal with that

Shouldn't have to change front hubs, just the studs. It's a popular swap, idk the Dorman part number off hand, but there's been alot of guys who have swapped just the studs to 9/16.

i think you are right on the fronts since i have Dually fronts, just changing the studs to 9/16

but i still need to figure out how to deal with the indentions on the hub for the stock coined setup
i don't think it would be safe to just install flat wheels on those

The hub itself is coined in on all 8 studs, so any other wheel would sit flat against the face once the studs are swapped

i see what your saying, but then do you buy lugs to fills those voids? or what style you change to, i understand the new wheels will be flat against the hub just wondering if the void causes a safety issue or vibrations

Shouldn't have to fill the voids with anything. There's a ton of meat there, and there only there to help center the front wheel, since stock uses the flat washer style lug nut, vs an acorn nut.
The new lugs would have the same knurled dimensions the old ones did, just a 9/16" vs 5/8" stud.

Shouldn't be any vibrations added, honestly think the new wheels would fit better than the stock coined rims, due to the new wheels being lug centered vs hub centered.

I'll add that I haven't personally swapped to 9/16" studs myself, only done the research due to wanting to get away from the coined wheels, and looking to run P30 19.5" rims, or stock 2ND gen wheels and going to 3rd Gen style brakes. I've seen alot of guys run 9/16" studs, and run aftermarket 2nd gen rims, or stock 2nd gen rims and have no issues. I haven't had any issues with the stock setup, but there is some care you have to take to get the rims centered rght, especially on the rear axle,

Are you refering to aftermarket 2nd gen dually wheels? Stock 2nd gen is still hub centric wheels with flange nuts but not coined rims right?

My truck has 2nd gen steel wheels on it... I still need to look into what they did to install them. I seem to get a little vibration at speed...
