Help me spend my money!

Postby laneends » Thu Jun 07, 2018 9:28 am

I have a pretty hefty shopping list worked up on The Hungry Diesel website, and just wanted to check with you if I'm on the right track.

First of I have a 1990 d250 single wheel standard cab, with the getrag 360. Modifications so far include : pyro, boost, volt, oil pressure, fuel pressure, and water temp gauges, hot screw, 366 gov spring, THD pin, M&H dynamic timing spacer, throttle linkage adjusted for full travel, 4" turbo back exhaust, THD's LPPLP, BHAF, south bend clutch. 2150rpm=60 mph. Most bought from Eric.

I will be using the truck to tow an enclosed trailer weighing approximately 8000 pounds, and would like to get Max power unloaded while staying cool on the egts while dragging my toys from Seattle to Coolin Idaho.

Attached is the cart I've worked up.

Towing and power, not a good combo. I tow very heavy with my 92 stock fuel setting ( tamper cap still on power screw ) a ground stock fuel cone, a 60mm gds H1C with a 16 cm hot side it will get to 1300 on hard hills. Its easy to make power, just hard to use it. My 93 has a s300 62mm with a 80ar hot side and at 300 hp it melts with the truck empty. Loaded its a joke.

I hear what you are saying, however, even before blowing another 3500$ with the mods in my signature, I can still hold all the hills I go over in 5th gear at 70 mph. It seems my truck is geared lower than most. 70 is 2500 rpm, and my (pre-turbo) egt is right at 1250 holding that speed over the pass and through the Colombia river basin. So I figured more air can't hurt right? I just want less smoke.
Also have a water to air setup I will install with the new turbo...Does any of this make sense?

You are most likely running a 4:10 rear gear which will definitely help on the hills. My NV4500 and 3.54's at 70mph is right around 2000rpm.

The stuff on your shopping list seem fine. The only thing I don't really think is necessary is the new exhaust manifold....unless your running big HP numbers on the dyno I doubt you will see any improvement over the stock manifold. If you really want a slightly better manifold you could pick up a 24V exhaust manifold for under $100 and grind the ports from oval to square-ish....probably give you about the same increase in performance then the $700 new unit. ;)

I have to admit the manifold it a little frivolous. Mine is leaking, and I already know it's not going to want to go back on when I take it off...

Shouldn't have any use for a hot screw on a n/ic pump, should be able to hit runaway with the stock screw. I'd do a bigger radiator, studs and twins if you want some usable towing power.

I know I didn't have to have the hot screw, but I messed my threads up pretty good getting the collar off so I bought one anyway, it's already in. I have a second gen radiator waiting to go in as well, I already start going north of 200 on longer grades. As far as twins go, I don't know if I want to fab all that in, with my water to air setup I think space is going to be at a premium... Is the s362sxe no good for a twin setup later? I haven't been paying much attention to the twin turbo threads....

I think that 62 is too big for towing heavy, by the time it spools your egts are going to be getting up there. I'd say something in the 58-60mm range would be better. An HE351 from an 04.5-07 common rail would be really good (and cheap), and would work very well in a compound setup later.

Considering you're only towing 8000 lbs and have 4:10 gears, imo you'd be ok towing with a 62/68/.7. If planning on twins later I'd go with something smaller. Are you going with a separate rad for the water to air cooler?

That's good to hear, I just pulled the trigger on the whole order, plus Eric's competition 5x13 injectors. Yes I have a separate radiator for the intercooler. No twins planned

I got to run home since we are in port and don't leave for Alaska until tomorrow. I decided to take the truck for a spin. Here's a crappy video of a couple WOT spurts, two in fourth gear, and one in fifth. Truck must be happy because I don't recall seeing +/- 45 psi before! She gets hot fast...

I read someplace an aftermarket manifold flows about 48CFM more than stock, which is a decent amount.

What I have for compounds would be exactly what I’d want if I were towing (60/60/.7 over a 67.7/83/1.1) spooled well, struggled to hit over 800 on any hill, or grade (even at 6500’asl). Made enough power to see the frame twist under hard acceleration, and annihilate the front countershaft bearing on my getrag after a year. For what I want to do (and the fact I don’t have any kind of hitch on my 93) I need looser turbine sides, and I could do with more compressor, but after having compounds I do not have any desire to go back to a single.

Max of 800 egts is pretty impressive! I'm not wanting twins at this point, especially since I just paid a boatload of money on Eric's recommended single, and injectors (s362sxe, flow honed 5x13's) I should be leaps and bounds cooler than I am now. Especially after I plumb in the water to air intercooler. I'll be a busy boy when I get home... Cummins Christmas! As you can see from the link I posted, my egts and boost soar off the charts right now, and the truck still tows my trailer 70 mph no issues (1250, and 200 over the pass)
