nv5600 2wd swap

Postby cousined » Fri Mar 29, 2019 2:16 am

guys, im doing an nv5600 swap in my 93 d250 2wd. i have a 2004 nv5600 from a wreck with 60k miles. it came with the 2004 adapter plate and starter but no clutch or flywheel. can i use this adapter and starter? should i just get a 2004 nv5600 clutch and flywheel combo from valair and it will work?

Use a 2nd gen adapter plate and starter. Some where in the 3rd gen years one bolt hole was moved in the engine adapter plate. The valair clutch will work. You will need the hydros from a 2nd or 3rd gen. The getrag hydros the line is to short and the push rod is a different length. You can modify the adjustable hydros M/C push rod to or remove it and use a 1st gen M/C push rod. You can order the hydros with the M/C pushrod loose in package.

You will need the starter spacer with a 5600 trans.

well sthi. lol. i gave $500 for the trans 60k miles. maybe i can sell the 3rd gen adapter and starter...

so i need a starter spacer even with the 2nd gen adapter and starter?2004 flywheel or whatever valair will send me with the clutch will work or can i get a correct flywheel without the spacer?

also, i have the slave on the 5600 and my mc is good. no way to splice that plastic line? iv seen where you can buy just the slave.

You will need the starter spacer with the 2nd gen adapter. If not having one adapter bolt missing doesn't bother you. The 3rd gen adapter would work. Here would b the easiest way to reuse the getrag hydro's.

https://www.summitracing.com/parts/rus-640281

These adapters will convert you to a AN #3 hydro line.

The slave is the same between getrag and NV. The slave push rods are different. Us the slave push rod you have with the NV

Use the second gen slave, a third gen is smaller diameter and overtravells the fingers on the clutch disc, i ruined a centerforce clutch like that. Can't remember which newer year hydraulic line i used, at that time you could buy individual parts, now they wanna sell you the whole assembly at exorbant prices. Had to change the end that plugs into the master. Sounds like Phillip has best idea on that. I moved the crossmember back one hole, drilled the frame there, then put the front crossmember holes there and drilled four more holes, the knee brace holes in upper frame rail were the most fun. you also have to move the shifter hole back quite a bit. I used the 5600 bracket and tranny mount, piece of 3/16 flat stock bolted to crossmember drilled for the 2 mount holes.

whether you use the spacer or not depends on which flywheel you wind up with, the 5600 had the ring gear teeth on the front edge which is why they used a spacer, the getrag and 4500 flywheels had the teeth on the rear of the flywheel, also there were 2 different getrag flywheels. some were 12 1/4, some were 13. When i lived in indiana was only about 45 miles from van haisleys shop, i bought a couple different used flywheels from him.

Could I use the 3rd gen starter and starter spacer that come with the trans and just swap the adapter for a 2ng gen?

Also, what to use for speedometer for the 2wd?

For the speedo you have two options. One is a GPS based speedo drive. 2ND is a dakato digital speedo conversion box. You would use the ABS sensor on the rear axle to provide a signal to the box.

I don't know if the 3rd gen starter works on a 2nd gen adapter.

How sure are you guys that I can't use the third gen adapter? Even missing one bolt?

2nd gen and 3rd gen adapters other than the one bolt hole are the same.

wouldn't that mean i could use the 3rd gen adapter as well as the starter? i think 7 out of 8 bolts will hold.

That's your call.

Of the ones that have done the swap. We wanted all bolts holes full.

ok, i dont wanna drop my getrag out and have to wait for parts.

so this is my plan:

2004 nv5600
2004 adapter (fill as many bolt holes as i can)
2004 starter
new rear main seal

clutch:https://www.rockauto.com/en/moreinfo.php?pk=4696866&cc=1424641&jsn=604
includes flywheel (93 flywheel bolts work?)

use -an adapters on my getrag master cyl, 2004 nv5600 slave with braided hose in between (will this work?)

will the getrag slip yoke work on the rear of the nv5600?

also, anything else i might need or be missing?

You will need to shorten the slave cylinder push rod. The getash rod is 1" longer than the 2nd gen push rods.

i would be using the 2004 tranny slave thats already on it. why would i need to shorten its pushrod?

like this:

oe 1st gen getrag clutch master cylinder
-an adapter
braided stainless hose
-an adapter
2004 nv5600 slave cylinder

why would you need to change the length of the rod? or will this combo just not work?
