Down again. Charging systwm.

Not too long ago I replaced the battery cables and the voltage regulator because the voltage was pulsing and slowly dropped to no charge. That fixed it for a while. Coming home last night the volt meter went full tilt and boiled my battery. I'll have to wait for the weather to clear before I can do any serious troubleshooting. Some mod history to keep it simple; The PCM voltage regulator was bypassed and replaced with the old style external VR a long time ago. The auto shutdown relay was also taken off the PCM's control and is activated by the ignition switch.

Sounds like the regulator gave up. Or some wires wore thru and touched causing the full field event. A lot of guys are installing the Transpo regulator, it's a small thing that bolts to the back of the alternator.

Just enough power to break everything behind the crankshaft.

Even though the voltage regulator was replaced last month, I'm not ruling it out. But usually when it gives up I have zero output. If I loose the reference voltage to it, that's when it go full tilt. I suspect the wiring at this point. It has happened before.

The other thing I read is to put a relay to feed the signal to the regulator direct from the battery. Then the regulator sees true battery voltage instead of something less due to bad wires.

92s and 93s all ready are, the auto shutdown relay. I just took the relay ground off the PCM and grounded it to the frame. No more CPS related alternator failures.
