I think you got all of the life out of that one.

Wow! That could have been really bad if it popped at the track! The good news is that it looks like you had the fuel and timing set about perfect.

Just enough power to break everything behind the crankshaft.

- Indeed, it could have been a big mess had I been coming off the line at WOT.
- I'll be using a different piston to better optimize stuff with the new build.

It's phackin amazing the people who post engines/parts for sale yet come off as reluctant (at best) to get off their ass and actually make the sale.

- Got a complete (less turbo, injectors and cam) '93 VE fueled engine on the way.
- Vacuumed the shop floor. Everywhere! Two large bags of pecans and squirrels. (Do the math).
- Cleared the bench of transmission crap!
- Put the valve-covers, the lube-oil cooler cover-plate, the lube-oil heat-exchanger, the remote lube-oil filter-head, it's bracket and hoses, the AC compressor mounting bracket in a bath of metal-safe detergent.

Off tomorrow. We'll see if I make anything of it.

- Pressure-washed the valve-covers, the lube-oil cooler cover-plate, the lube-oil heat-exchanger, the remote lube-oil filter-head, it's bracket and hoses, the AC compressor mounting bracket.
- Pressure-washed the exposed, general area around the remaining block as it sits in the truck.
- Pulled the cam and lifters.
- Inspected the cam, lifters and pushrods.
- Wept a little.

I got 188/220 steel cam and 24v lifters from Zach in Feb of 2012. I'd been running his 110 (?) valve-springs with his 1st stage HD (whatever) pushrods.

Anyhoo, pulling the cam out this afternoon and standing back and looking at stuff reveals things like:

- The lobes of the cam have a surface of anywhere from smooth to heavily cratered (?)
- The lifters smooth to heavy cratering (?)

1 - Exhaust . . . .

Image

3 - Intake . . . .

5 - Exhaust . . .

All of the lobes present with shadows on the ramps . . .

I'm gonna go out on a limb and say I've gotten my monies worth from the rods, huh? Some have grown nipples.

Image

I've always run a good dose of the ZDDP supplement stuff with Rotela. Ya reckon there's any salvaging of that cam?

Crap!

I worry about most of our equipment. I suspect all of my diesel equipped stuff has flat tappet. This low zinc deal sucks.

BC, you think it's the lack of ZDDP that caused the cratering? I dumped a couple bottles in when I changed the oil once, but the darn stuff was about $15 a bottle so I gave that up.

IIRC, I ran two bottles of the stuff with the installation of that cam.
- I always add a bottle with each oil change.

Come to find out, there's a difference in the ball size (that which sticks in the lifter) between the 12v lifter and the 24v lifter. No wonder the weird wear. DOH! :grrr:

I'd been running the earlier lifter and pushrods with the former 181/210 cam. THEN, put in the 188/220 cam with the 24v lifters.

Huh.

Fun Fact: The replacement short-block is coming from a mortician.

- Applied what turned out to be an awful coat of paint to the valve-covers and bracket stuff.
- Disassembled, chased the threads, thoroughly cleaned, and resealed the three AN hose fittings on the engine oil-cooler cover-plate. It's been a leaking PITA with Teflon tape. I read and followed the instruction of the Leak-Lock. It'll have plenty of time to cure before use.
- Removed and cleaned the stupid/expensive billet freeze-plugs and block-heater. The O-rings present as being easily reusable as found. They ain't old.

Any mechanic has had to play in that job line at one time or another. I have made many a piece of rolling stock a donor body.

Picked up the replacement engine stuff today. Put it all on a pallet next to the truck.

The thing appears to be that from a non-ICed truck. Diaphragm type vacuum-pump, obviously wider piston bowls. I reckon there's a non-ICed VE pump in there (I saw the thing. Just didn't pull it out of the box). A 1st gen AND a 2nd gen engine/trans adapter-plate. Two cooling fans w/clutches. The block, head and crankshaft are still on the truck. (It was dark:30).

Cool. 8)
