Just a little more . . . . .

How to make it go fast

Finally found a somewhat local machine shop experienced specifically with a 12v. As they pretty-much are the only in the 'hood, there's an expected three to four week turn-around time. Take a number . . . . :?

Got to sit down with the block and have a prayer meeting. Lay hands on it and see what pistons and bearings (if any) are needed. Got the head on the bench. Need to remove the valves and see how they, the guides and seats are.

Screw it. Let's go to the beach.

It is getting towards the beach time of year! Good choice. ;)

Just enough power to break everything behind the crankshaft.

48 hours later . . .

Rooted around a little in the boxes of engine parts that came to me. Looks to be a NON ICed VE based on those long DV-holders.

Image

Interestingly, found one of the compound fuel filter adapters.

Image

That, and this stationary mount (there's two of what look like side mounts as well) makes me wonder was it a stationary Indust/Agri power unit.

Image

But, there's that AFC on top of the IP. There's one of the dual-diaphragm vacuum-pumps. There's also a handful of stuff that don't seem to be related. (Just throw it all in the box. Make it go away).

Pulled the block out of the cold-wash and pressure-washed it well. (The thing was surprisingly clean internally as it went into the wash).

The NW Foundry, USA?

Image

The large freeze-plugs I removed look to be in excellent condition. . . . . ?

Image

The readily seen coolant-jacket interior is remarkably clean and rust free.

Isn't there suppose to be a copper bearing in the front-most cam journal?

I've had these things for a while and actually use them on occasion. This episode has me using the internal micrometer thingy. Cool!

Image

OK. The FSM calls for a minimum cylinder bore of 4.0157". Fine.
I set my caliper to 4.0157ish".

Image

Then, I set the internal micrometer for 4.0157ish".

Now, according to the FSM, I want to go into the cylinder bore one inch and measure the bore oriented left to right.

Image

Then, front to back.

Image

Next, we move down an additional 4.5" for a total of 5.5" (ish ought to be good enough. I hope).
Bottom, left to right.

Image

Then, bottom front to back.

You wrote that sthi down, right?

Give or take 0.001ish . . .

Image

NOTE: I also measured the bore, just under the topmost flare, just above where the piston-ring wear stops (the ridge). They are around 4.0192" ish as noted.

If my measurements are right, it seems the cylinders are just inside the FSM specified maximum diameter of 4.0203"'. Out of round and taper, . . . not so much.

DERP. Those 0.012ish" measurements are suppose to read 0.02ish"

Yes, there should be a bearing in the front cam journal, it's the only one that has a bearing. ;)

Yeah, looks like somebody cleaned the bore with sandpaper whatever.

Got the donor crankshaft cleaned up. As received, it had some boogers of corrosion on the journals. Sanding/polishing it away reveals a little pitting. I don't have a proper micrometer to measure them accurately but, using some relatively good calipers finds them looking like 0.010" ought to clean them up. 0.020" at the most.

Image

The front crankshaft seal will need a Speedy-Sleeve.

Image

The rear crankshaft seal . . . . dunno. Polishing might clean it up enough.

Image

Moving on to my head, removing the valves finds them well worn. The intake-valves all present with notable pounding type wear? See the ridge?

Image

The exhaust-valves are done.

Image

All the valve-stem tips present with visible wear at the rocker-arm interface.

Image

The head itself is in the cleaning vat.

Crap.

After soaking for two or three days, pulled the head out of the vat and pressure-washed it.

- All the valve-seats present with notable wear. It's very clear that the valves have not been rotating as they work. Lots of small groove type wear, everywhere.
I think a simple redressing should clean them up. I hope, anyway.

This Corona crap is hitting home hard. Stuck at home isolating. No income on my part ATM. The workplace appears well secure so far. >Fingers Crossed<

Wanna upgrade the truck brakes? Try a Corona-Virus related "Temporary Lay-Off".

S hit comes to a halt real quick.

- To be continued.

My Son was kind enough to get those bell-housing bolts removed (it was a PITA). That and the front mounts had the OEM short-block come on out. It's first, and last unfortunately.

What a mess.
