Injection Pump? White Smoke?

Postby wilkyflex » Thu Oct 22, 2020 3:19 pm

My truck started and was running perfectly and then I noticed when I would go to start it, it took more revolutions before it would start. Each time I stopped thp/2 throttle and blows white smoke out the tail pipe. And adjusting the throttle does nothing to the RPM's. It just stays at a certain RPM and then blows white smoke.

After maybe 10 minutes or so, the engine will slowly go to idle and then die unless I give it some throttle.

But it never runs normally. I give it throttle and it won't run at higher RPM's. Only low RPM's.

Any idea on the problem?

I think it may be an defective injection pump.

What do you say? Help!!!

Thanks
Dean

Dean, sounds like it may be sucking air. Or a bad lift pump, but my guess is sucking air. Pressurize the fuel tank with a few pounds of air and look for leaks.

I check the lines and they all seem good. No leaks and nothing lose.

So I'm thinking it's the injection pump. I know it's not getting enough fuel. Took the lift pump off and apart and checked it and it seems good.

This happened once before and it was the injection pump. but the one I had rebuilt didn't last long.

Damn, I'm tired of this injection pump. I need someone to do it right

Check with Eric at The Hungry Diesel. He does good work and is reputable. I've had him do injectors for me a couple times. He specializes in 1st gens.

Did you check the fuel supply pressure to make sure you have enough?

No, I haven't done that. would that be the pressure to the injection pump? What should the pressure be?

Yes, usually after the filter so you can tell if the filter is getting clogged. Stock diaphragm lift pump should be 5-7, maybe as low as 2-3, but never 0. I can draw mine down to 0 on the highway, but the po installed a filter between the tank and LP and I think its restricting it.
A low pressure piston pump should be 13-15 when new, maybe 7-10 on the highway.
