Fuel Pumps

Postby fasttalker83 » Tue Mar 25, 2008 6:03 pm

I would like to know what everyone thinks of getting rid of my stock lift pump on my 90 and blocking it off and going with a electric fuel pump only thing Im worried about is getting one and then the thing go out wont this burn my injection pump up when theres no fuel going to it? and I dont want to go with a FASS or Air Dog system thinking more like a Holly black pump or something like that

theres no problem doing that i did that exactly, but i cant find a block off plate so i just left the lift pump there

holly is garbage, go with an aeromotive 11104 with there regulator, and your going to need a high pressure seal in the front of you pump or you risk blowwing it out

Why Not keep the Stock Pump for Backup?

Postby Ace » Wed Mar 26, 2008 7:11 am

I'd keep the stock pump installed in parallel with shutoff and check valves inline, so it could be used for a backup/spare. Redundancy in the fuel system is always a good thing.

I believe the Holley black or equivalent runs at around 14psi, so that would be ideal for the VE pressurewise, with no additional regulator hardware/plumbing required. I used an Edelbrock 1792 160GPH model in case I ever need more fuel for bigger injectors.

i've had several 11 second street driven bb mopars fed by holley pumps without any problems (i've used blue pumps and the 250 series with the appropriate regulator). drive the car to the track and back on pump gas. they're kinda noisy compared to some higher $$$ pumps but they work fine. i've also owned bg, aeromotive, and magnafuel components. i suggest any opinions that are thrown on here that may affect someone's purchasing of a part be based on some kind of facts rather than just spewing about things being garbage.

now back to the subject at hand, i've read that a small block chevy block off plate works on the cummins. that give you tons of options if its true. a fuel pressure guage that monitors inlet pressure at the inj pump will help you avoid a burnt pump no matter what brand of transfer pump you decide on.

sorry i should re say what i ment, to get the high pressure need to make the hp's holly wont cut it, if you only need 15psi the its fine but not 50 or 60psi

Holly blues don't like to suck fuel. I don't know if it's the diesel, or the fact it had to pull the fuel too far, but my buddy burned up 2 of them in 6 months. He just moved it waaaay back next to the tank, and installed a filter pre-pump. I guess we'll see what happens! ;)
Oh, he has one of those great VP-44 IP's too!

Fuel pressure gauge is a must- I have one on my D-truck. I replaced the bleeder banjo above the fuel filter with a 1/8NPT tapped one, and ran the line from there to the sending unit.

The reason I say it's a must, is that I have noticed a slightly lower idle lately, and it doesnt take much to slurp the fuel pressure down to "0" with a brand new filter. Makes me think the Airtex/ O'Reilley pump isnt as good as the Carter they used to have.

I'm thinking about returning the LP (lifetime warranty), and installing a piston pump in its place. I'm still leery of electric pumps- main reason I drive what I drive.

I toasted 2 holley blues on my truck to and the pumps were mounted by the tank. Even with the holley blue and no regulator i could pull the pressure down to 5 or less psi with a set of 435 sticks. I would spend the money on a better elec pump and a regulator or upgrade to a second gen piston pump with a regulator. And yes a sb chev block plate will fit I have a billet thing on mine of an old sb chev project.

you can not prefilter any electric pump - period - and I dont care what the manufacturers say - they cavitate or cant draw fuel
