Propane torch for weed/brush removal

Postby bgilbert » Mon Apr 28, 2008 7:28 pm

This thread could probly go in the Lounge, but I figure it's a tool! Anyone use one of those propane torch attachments for killing/burning weeds along their fence, yard, sidewalk etc? I don't care for weed eaters, all my weeds are along the fence (chainlink) and in my experience, could just be the junk weedeaters I've used, it's hard on the whip etc. So pss on the weedeater. I like fire, I have access to propane, 20# cylinders etc, and thought this would be cool to have lol. The neighbors already think I'm nutts, so this wouldn't hurt.

I'm just wondering how well it works and if anyone has any experience with them etc.

if you had one of those big flame adapaters like they use at the dragstrip to remove rubber you could clear the fence line pretty quick  . just make sure everythings out before you go inside. neighbors thinking your crazy and neighbors knowing your crazy because you burned down thier house while doing some yard maintenance is two totally different things :P

I thought it was a joke the first time I heard of one. It was in the local classifieds and said it was a big torch head that could be used for heating things up, removing paint, and burning weeds. I read it out loud and laughed about it and a guy I work with said he had one and it worked great. I was picturing a rosebud tip for oxy/acetelyne. I kind of like weedeaters, but I reckon the only thing better than power tools is fire. 8)

Weedeaters and chainlink dont mix very well. I like the idea of Roundup, etc. We use about a gallon (concentrate) every summer. but then we still have the dead plant matter to contend with. Which would be easy to burn. I'm not even a firebug, and am thinking of this stuff.

I agree with Pete- if anyone's house catches fire, it'll be Bill's. Or his shop, with countless junk parts lying around, and lots of oil and stuff to fuel the fire further.

Go out and buy yourself some permenant kill and spray the fence line. Mix it like they tell you to because if you add more it makes it loose its affect. After it all dies then burn it off and move on.

If roundup keeps them dead for a month you are doing good in this area.

Update

Postby bgilbert » Sun Jun 08, 2008 8:40 pm

Well I finally got around to buying one. It was $40 from Rural King. Man this thing is awesome. It was real windy today so it took longer I imagine to burn the weeds from the flame getting blown around. I'm sold though.

ck, see if this link works: http://www.tractorsupply.com/webapp/wcs ... ue&cFlag=1

It's identical to that one only was less expensive. Sorry can't upload/post pics on this computer. Would've been a cool pic, looked like a forest fire from the huge smoke clouds over my yard hehe.

I heard there was a forest fire in Indiana, was that you?

Hey, I went to the site and saw the torch, does that operate from tank pressure? And come with a spark ignitor?

I wanna get a Rodentator. Same sorta thing, fills the tunnels with propane, blasts the little bastids!

A little roundup with 2 four D really burns the weeds hard and quick, mix in a little pursuit and they wll be dead for years. When we are done spraying in the spring, our sprayer always has about 10gal of spray left in the sump. We drain it out and use it for stuff like that. Any farmer with any good size sprayer will have "something" good to kill weeds.
