strange tickin sound

Postby randyswelding » Mon Jul 07, 2008 7:36 pm

howdy again :D ,it started back when i got the truck with about 243000 miles on it and started playin with the pump.if you go around the from of the truck in front of the grill with the hood down you hear a tickin sound. you open the hood it sounds like it has an air leak(is that a pssst i need a ps cooler)then stick your head in front of the grill you still hear the tickin  you can run up the rpm and it still makes it,but it is intermitent in the upper rpm it tickes mostly at idal and slight about.and i swear it sounds like it is loosin air some where?can that be it the intercooler has a leak in it? :D new ps cooler needed soon:D thanks guys i still got 32psi though :D

At idle or with no load on it you wouldn't hear a boost leak.

Check your exhaust manifold gaskets. The manifold likes to scrink when your EGT's are high.

If the exhaust gaskets are good. Take a stethoscope and listen to the injection pump. If its making a ticking noise then you got problems.

i got some time to play with the truck i retorked the exhaust manifold and turbin housin and stethiscoped the valve covers and found #2 was louder than all the others :D so another valve job is needed, whats the intervals for a valve job i just did one this winter but thats about 25k ago is that too soon

What do you mean, "valve job"? You need to get the valves ground? Or do you mean set the clearance? The Cummins book says every 1000 hours to set clearance. My truck wasn't done in over 150k miles. It wasn't off much at all. Maybe 1 nut isn't tight and the screw backed off.

I would at least tighten the one or 2 down a little bit. I'm sure it's not doing anything any good beating together like that.

An old boss of mine used to say that a tappy valve is a happy valve. While loose isn't really good, it is better than too tight.
