Odd question about the VE...

Postby aspoonhour » Sat Aug 02, 2008 3:24 pm

My new truck ('91 W250 auto/OD) runs real well. Nothing out of the ordinary. I know someone, at some point has been into the pump. Not sure what was done or why, but I'm curious...
On either of my other trucks(Both CTD's), a very light touch on the pedal will raise the engine RPM and "get you going". With this one, it seems like you need to "push the pedal" further to get going as well as to keep going(like maintaining speed on the hwy). The power is not missing, it just seems to be quite a bit further into the pedal which could mean I might not be getting to all of it(power)?

If the throttle lever is off by a notch(on the pump shaft) is it possible that it would run but seemingly lack some power? Could idle be adjusted to compensate and "mask" this? Maybe I'm just nuts and it's just different that my others. I would like to make any necessary fixes when I put the 3000rpm spring in. I can take some pics if someone could tell, if it looks correct.

Thanks!

The 1st thing to check is the throttle linkage. The plastic ball joints on the linkage wear out and get real loose. Mine fell off at 1 point.
I put small heim joints on it. Works great!

Just enough power to break everything behind the crankshaft.

The end links are steel. Must have been changed. Linkage is tight and moving the throttle lever is not the issue, as far as I can tell. That is why I'm wondering if there is a chance that the lever is in the wrong position on the shaft and some how it was compensated for.

Thanks!!!

Sitting in park does it seem to do this or just driving the truck around? If its just driving it around it could just be the auto is getting tired, or the convertor is. My old truck back in the day did that when I kept killing the 727s.

could be a difrence in gears? some trucks had 3.08 some 3.54 and some 4.10 right?

if one truck has 4.10 and one has 3.08 there would be a big difrence between geting them moving right?

The only trucks that had 3.08 gears were the '89-'91.0 auto trucks. Intercooled trucks have either 3.54 or 4.10 gears. A 5spd Non I/C truck might have had 4.10s as an option. Not sure though...

In my experience, gearing makes little difference in get up and go. Your pump could be in need of going through, or the injectors could be tired and needing reset. Also, check your valves, and lift pump supply and pressure.

Thanks guys. I appreciate it. I'll goes check the gears but it is an OD trans, so I'm assuming 3.54's. Lift pump is new. I will be doing a few things this weekend, but I'm starting to think it's just me and simply a "different" truck.

I hope to have a 16cm housing tomorrow. So, I hope to get it installed and start on exhaust.

We'll see.
Thanks!

As stupid as this may sound I ran into a similar problem a few years ago on the 93 that I had (that i wish i still had it was rust free and an extended cab). I checked everything I could think of, took it to my buddies house and we went back through the linkage, took the fuel filter off dumped it out to see whether a bunch of crap would fall out and nothing happened. Threw it back on and decided to buy a new filter the next day, it was like a new truck after that. So i cut the old filter apart to see what had happened and the bottom half of the filter was caked with "stuff" that looked like grease. I dropped the tank and found it in there to. So I called the guy I bought it off of and found out he was running crude oil from the local oil field in it for a couple of months. Besides getting pissed off that my truck was run on an unknown source, I learned that you could run it on straight crude oil. Have no idea if that will help.

My 89 does the rev at low throttle thing in park. It will rev to 3600 with very little throttle. It is not full fueling and takes a second to get up there. It only did this after I turned up the fuel screw a fair amount. Before I turned the fuel screw up the rpms would only raise with further pedal travel. My other 89 I had was steady rpm increase only as pedal was pushed. I think with the fuel screw turned in it allows overfueling at low throttle settings.
