16cm2 exhaust housing, 366 spring and a few other things...

Postby aspoonhour » Mon Aug 11, 2008 5:34 pm

Not trying to build a race truck, but...I installed this stuff this weekend. Successful on all counts! That little spring had me worried for a few...Nothing a few cuss words would fix. It was my first time with only 2 hands. The housing was easy until it came time to separate the old exh housing from the rest of the turbo. Took a little patience and persuasion. The rest was easy. Also readjusted the the throttle linkage and checked the valve lash. Also, found a piece of plastic (from on of the connectors in the intake plate that is broken) stuck under the lip of the #5 valve cover. It had ripped an inch long tear in the gasket and was still there under the lip of the VC. Guess I know where it was leaking oil from. Replaced all of the VC gaskets. The P.O.'s maintenance guy didn't seem to be too particular about stuff.

The verdict? Runs great!!! LOTS better than before. It's probably getting a little more fuel than before(removed the fuel screw to get cover back on), but this made for a very pleasant drive back and forth to work!!! Definately peppier! Getting on the hwy was as fun as in my Dually. Cruising at 60-65 I felt like I was barely touching the gas pedal. Maybe if I'm lucky, I'll gain a mile or two of MPG's. I'm not going to give it any more fuel until I get my guages and install them(I know...They should have been first). This truck is going to be a daily driver/offroad truck, so it will rarely(if ever) tow anything!

I definately recommend the 366 spring! It just makes the truck feel stronger with less pedal. Our CTD Ramcharger was the same way.

Soo...Thanks guys!!! I keep postin' as I get more things done!!! I'll start on the 4" exhaust soon.

Thanks gang!

Guess I should have mentioned that...It's a 1991 W-250 With O/D auto and it's Intercooled. It came with a 21cm Exh housing. The 16 spools quicker so boost should be coming on faster. I don't know if there is "more" boost, necessarily. I believe it is due to the internal size of the housing. I'd bet EGT's are up a little, but I'm playing nice with it, until I get my guages. I just wanted a bit more "pep" because it is a daily driver. Seems to have helped quite a bit.

An HX35 may be in the future. I think MadMax (he posts here on occasion) has an HX35/16cm and POD's. His '93 D250 is a fun one. He loves it. We'll see where it goes. I have to admit, as little as I know about these engines, it sure is nice to have an "extra one" to "tinker" with and be able to get back and forth to work if something goes wrong. My 1993 Dually would probably LOVE some of the little things that I've done to the '91 over the last few weeks. I never did anything like this to it, for fear of a "problem". Just couldn't take the chance.

Too me, these little things are simple enough to do, but complex enough to learn more about these things.
