Crazy Shakedown Please Help???????

Postby MidnightRyder » Thu Sep 04, 2008 7:46 am

Hey guys just a quick question, i changed my wheel bearings and unless its a coincedence i think i might have messed something up. Now when i hit the brakes with good pressure when i need to stop, my truck just starts shaking like crazy and pulling to the passenger side. Anyone have an idea of what i could have dun. Because of the pull i thought maybe the driver side brake wasnt working but i jacked it up and checked and both sides are stoping the wheels when i had someone else hit the brakes as i spun the tires. Any clue im clueless and frustrated. i notice my drag link is real whimpy so im going to change that but i dont think that would do it. like i said it started after i changed the wheel bearings and seems to be getting worse. thanks guys.

a bad warped rotor? thats what i would check. if it doesnt wobble or anything driving then its not the wheel bearing so i would check that off. do you smell anything at all after it happens or while driving?

Lift the front of the truck so the tires are in the air and grab the top and bottom of the tire and try to move them in/out. This will tell you if there is slack in the wheel bearing. If it checks as being good pull the tire and bearing cap and nut. Recheck your bearings and make sure nothing broke. Its possible you got a bad bearing and a cage exploded. I would check the rotors as stated above 1st however.

What do you mean by the draglink is "wimpy"? If it has some slack in it, then it can cause a shake referred to as "death wobble". Pretty much anything with excessive play from the steering shaft to the wheels can cause it. Jack up the frontend and grab the top and bottom of the tire like fergavs said and try to pivot it on the hub. Any movement is bad. Also check the king pins with a prybar to look for up and down movement. Does the truck have any lift or really aggresive tires?

Check your caliper slides for rust and gunking up. Mine were rusted and the caliper didnt slide nice and smooth- hit a rough spot created from sitting for 2 years, and shuddered like crazy at certain brake strengths.

If it pulls, I'd suspect a caliper not engaging or releasing. Replace them in pairs- they arent too costly.

On the bearings, did you torque then back off the retaining nut? New cotter pin? JUst checking some of the basics.
