Buying first dodge diesel, need tips

Postby roy john » Tue Jan 06, 2009 1:27 pm

First of all, I can be a little clueless. PLEASE don't laugh at me! I have a few details of the truck i'm lookin at, but lookin at the prev forums, its not near all that i need! to my best knowledge its a 90, nonintercooled, 5 spd, 4x4. It hasn't been inspected since 01, and last started a few years prier to now. stuck a battery in an it fired right up! :D it came stock with single rear, he made it a duolly, and put a flat bed on it. at some point he replaced the trans. the new rear had a different ratio and ripped up the front. Just for starters i need 2 rears and a bed! :? he will take $500 for the truck! is this a good deal? it will be a daily driver but hope to make it a progect truck. and wat mods should i put on it for starters? thanks

$500 seems like a pretty good deal to me. If it is rust free, you should snatch it for $500.

You want to make it back into a SRW? I have seen quite a few 3.54 geared rears on various classfields, so that shouldn't be a big problem. A bed in good condition may be a little difficult to find.

As far as upgrades, it all depends on what you want to do with the truck. But for sure, especially with a 5spd, you should get a 366 spring, and maybe look into either grinding the stock fuel pin, or get an aftermarket one.

If it has been sitting that long, I would change all the fluid before I did anything with it.

if ya want to mod your starter larry b has the beefier starter contacts. here is his website. http://www.fostertruck.com/

also welcome to 1st gen . org

ya might list your location. i know of good beds in idaho. perhaps would work out a trade for your bed. i also know of 60s and 70s if you are close enough.

sounds like a decent price. congrats.

yeah i want to get it back to original. some one suggested i look for a newer model bed. but didn't know what year they changed the style.

as for the pin, i took note that would be an option, as was a 3 pc, manifold. also smaller turbo housing, and deffinently injectors. but couldn't find any intake kits

First thing first. Go buy the sucka. Then get ready to spend money. If it runs it is worth 500 bucks. It may be another thing if its worth fixin. I am doing a rebuild on a 93 that should have been thrown away. I did not want to strip it and part it out so I fixed it. Took lots of time but my spare time is free. 8)

Yup, engine is worth 3 times what he wants for it. Get it now and worry about fixing after it's home. ;)

The beds are the same from '82 (or thereabouts) up to '93. Get it running 1st, and then worry about upgrading after. You might find that something is bad, like the turbo, (for example) so upgrade it when you replace it.

Thanks guys, great tips :salut: 1 thing i didn't mention was that he also has a 91, intercooled, 2wd,5 spd that he took the bed off and extended it to a 11 ft flat bed, this one he also put a duolly rear on. this one only has 120,000 mi. 90 4x4 has 180,000.

for the 91 he wants $1000!

really want the 4x4 but then i didn't have the intercoolr. also wasn't real fond of shortin up the bed. :?

any words of wisdom? :P

Intercoolers are not that big of a deal. The non i/c trucks do well at stock to slightly bombed rigs. The non i/c will have more power then the intercooled truck if they are both stock.
