NEED HELP TRUCK DEAD ON THE SIDE OF THE ROAD

Postby redneckroot » Sat Feb 07, 2009 5:43 pm

A good friend of mine is down in FL with his 93 cummins. He was driving down the road and the truck just shut off, no stumbles, no clanks, just like you shut it off. He cracked the injector lines and fuel squirts out hard enough to hit the fender. When cranking it over it just cranks without even trying to start. He tried all day today to get it running, it made one pop when another guy was playing with the manual shut off lever. He put a new fuel filter in thinking maybe it was clogged. There is a slight drip out of the bottom of the injection pump Any help either posted or a phone call to him would be a great help, being in NY I can't be there to help him. His number is 716- 432- 5470.

First guess would be to check voltage at the shut-off solenoid. The wire on the top of the injection pump needs 12 volts for the vehicle to run; without 12 volts, it will cause problems as you describe.

Or the solenoid went bad. Remove the solenoid and pull the plunger and spring out, then solenoid back in. Should run then, but he will have to shut it off with the lever.

You can still get fuel with the solenoid not working, just not enough to run it.

Just enough power to break everything behind the crankshaft.

a person could also try running a wire directly from the postive terminal on the battery to the solinoid to see if that makes things work .

A little nothing major. We think that leaving the key on is what caused it. I was reading about the VE on vw's and they have a warning saying not to leave the key on for longer then 20 seconds because it burns the solenoids out faster.

Glad your buddy got it going. Check on e-bay for a new solenoid, usually can find them for about $30.
