Doing it right

Postby 90FIRSTGEN CUMMINS » Fri Mar 27, 2009 7:39 am

I am looking for suggestions on upgrades for my truck. What am I after? I want a go fast but drivable towing vehickle. I am looking for suggestions on anything from what turbo would be best to what gauges seem to work the best. My main objective is to only buy parts once and not two and three times like I did with that junk HY35. Your help is appreciated and can't wait to get upgrading.

Turbo options in no particular order.
S300 either the 57mm base or the 62mm better model ( RSWORDS just bought a 62mm silver model and is nice ) 1000 to 1500 bucks.
You can also get a super hx40 turbo that is also a nice unit. ( see philip, Im learning ) :D
Gauge options
I have autometer in one truck and Isspro in another. Autometer gauges were easier to wire up. The Isspro has booster boxes that are kinda a pain. Both brands seem to work well. Isspro has the easiest tach systems for the non PCM trucks. There little sensor kits work well.
Exhaust.
The best exhaust out there is the 4 inch STANS system. With shipping you are looking at around 650 or there abouts. Very good fit. They can also set up the downpipe for your style turbo. The H1C and hx35 has the 3 inch flange and the HX40 and S300 has the 4 inch flange.
Intercooler.
Its a pain in the butt to install a intercooler but very worth it. You have a couple options. I put a 7.3 powerstroke cooler in mine. Some guys also use a second gen dodge intercooler. The easiest option would be find a donor 1st gen 91.5 to 93 with a stock set up. The core support, radiator, grill, upper water outlet and lots of other odds and ends are different.
Some guys ( begle1 ) like water meth injection instead of an intercooler. That also works to help cool exhaust gasses but I personally don't want to have a tank to run dry in the middle of a hill and have to back out of the throttle.
Your injectors will work fine for your goals.
They flow plenty of fuel for 300 hp. You don't want any more then that if you are going to tow with it. There is a start. Gotta go eat. 8)

I have a 4 inch exhaust from Bully Dog but the downpipe is a 3 inch. Thanks for your input

If there is any more helpful hints anyone has I would appreciate it. Is 300 hp about the max if i want to still use the truck to tow with or can I go a little higher if I can keep my foot out of it on a tow(easier said than done I know).

What do you want to tow? 300 towing HP in a 1st Gen will pull down a house.

I believe there is a member over on DTR that tows with 400hp, but he's running twins, and a aftermarket cam to keep things under control. I think you could tow with more than 300hp, but it ain't gonna be cheap to keep your engine happy.
