DAMN

Postby Redneckintraining » Wed Apr 01, 2009 1:27 pm

So I found out why I am getting such horrible MPG (12-13 MPG UNLOADED on the highway). Turns out my fuel injectors are shot. They must be just slightly worn out because the truck still starts up and power doesnt seem to be down much.Although I just got a new throttle cable and linkage and it woke the truck up, so I could be missing a ton of power and not realize it...

I know that I am getting horrible MPG, sometimes hard starting(a couple of cranks instead of simply "breathing" on the key), and a unburnt fuel haze following me(it is very faint, but is still there.

I am looking at $1000 bucks to fix it.Thats 1/3 the value of the truck.Right now I sure as hell can't afford a repair like that.My my current income of $260 a month I have about $15 bucks left over that will take forever to buy injectors.I am thinking of selling it unless I can find a good used cheap set of injectors for a NON intercooled truck. Would anyone happen to have some used but good condition stock injectors? If not I suppose I could sell the truck and find a ramcharger for sub 1000 with a bad motor then find a frito lay truck...

How do you know the injectors are shot, did you have them pop-tested, or what?

$1000.00 BS... Find a different injection shop and ask them to clean them and set them matched for flow and pressures. Cripes man, you can buy PODS on these diesel forums almost any week for $300-400.00 bucks. On your income you better stop wanting something else. You get yourself into a 4bt conversion project and you'll lose your ass on it. Those conversions end up costing alot more than they ever return in fuel efficiency etc. Mostly big boy toys, projects etc.

You can put I/C injectors in a Non-I/C engine. You just need the 7mm to 9mm adapters. Any fuel shop should have them. It's the sealing washer with a bushing on it.
SDS is right, you can buy injectors for $400 all day long. There was a set of 6x.016s on here for $500 a few weeks ago.

you can build your own pop tester for under 100.00 .....

then from there it is just a mater of getting new tips and calibrating the injectors to pop at the same pressure .
the learning curve might be a bit steep .... but once you get it figured out it opens all sorts of doors for you to fine tune your engine .

I havent gotten them pop tested yet because its my daily driver.I had a shop check it out and it smokes alot and smells like diesel.Than and the shop says it runs too smooth be be the injection pump going out.

I haven't pulled the injectors because dont they have seals and such? Also I wam worried about bending the fuel lines.

I bend my lines all the time, just a bit of course, with no issues. and if a shop told me they wanted to 1000 bucks to clean my injectors i would of laughed at them and walked out! and if the truck runs smooth i would dought its the injectors because usually they run rough with bad injectors

Still wouldnt hurt to get the injectors checked. It can run smooth, and have decent power, and still get horrible MPGs. Had a 93 W350 that got horrible MPGs, and a clean and reset of the injectors got me back to the high teens.

Same goes for the pump. I had the pump redone in my 91 after I got down to 15mpg city (average when I got it was 19-20), and gained 3-4mpg. Ran smooth, had decent power, EGTs were right in line. The advance piston was stuck or cracked or something.

Miles Diesel in Jackson MO will clean and reset pop pressures for ~$10 each. New tips are around $65 each. Worst case scenario- $400 if you need all 6 sticks.

the shop charges 15 bucks an injector to clean them and reset the injectors. If they rebuild the injectors than its close to 1000, after parts and labor.

so there isnt a seal that needs to be replaced if I pull the injectors? If thats the case then I will get them pop tested today or tommarow.I just heard that there was a seal that needed to be replaced if I pulled the injectors.

There's a copper washer that sits on the end of the injector. They're cheap. You might be able to reuse them, but it's not usually worth the hassle if they leak. Make sure you get the old ones out of the hole if they stick, and put a dab of grease on the new one to stick it to the injector when you put them in.
Most places, cleaning the injector is taking it apart, cleaning it and putting it back together. What's different about a rebuild? There aren't any parts changed unless something is really bad, except for the shims to set the pressure.

"rebuilt" injectors normally mean new tips.

Ok, so tips are $900 a set? I'd find another shop in a hurry, that's just outright rape!
