Guess that Axle (1st gen axle upgrade)

Postby pulltilbroke » Tue May 12, 2009 12:17 am

Check out what stillsmokin and me are workin on, can you guess what axle it is?

These have been used in gas pull trucks in our area for quite a while with a lot of good results in stock form, This one has been altered quite a bit using parts from another common rear

Your not gonna have a problem in your class pulling with a non 1-ton or lower axle will you? Or is it just brush pulls?

The beauty of this axle is its out of 3/4 and 1 ton trucks so we'll still be able to pull at any hook this axle has some serios beef, Its got a lot of advantages over a 70 and even an 80, 2" pinion, 3 pinion bearings, pinion support, and a load bolt to resist ring gear deflection, Think Semi truck hardware for a pickup :D

Along with RumbleFish...

It looks kind of like the 14 bolt Eaton that was used before the Corporate 14 bolt...but that's just my guess

Bingo 93fummins

It is an GM HO72 used from 47-72 in GM 3/4 and 1 ton trucks

Alot of the 14b parts will fit in the HO72 carrier to make a pretty killer axle

Exactly, if you break it in the light class you still got time to swap out the pig before the heavy class :D if you brought a spare with ya

and with the steel housing you dont have to worry about twisting the centersection out of the axle tubes

Will the 14 bolt ring and pinions work? If not what kind of gear ratios are available?

No they are not interchangable

The available ratios are 4.10,4.57,5.13 and I think thats it, there might be 1 lower gearset available, but the 4.57s are the most common
The drawback is there are no aftermarket gearsets available for this rear so you got to find good used ones

Heres a pic of a 14b (top) and a HO72 pinion for comparison

The 14b pinion is the same size as a D80

Another thing to keep in mind is the 1410 yoke for this rear is 200$

And pinion bearings are real spendy too so find a good used rear with low miles
