cummins thermostat

Postby Remps » Sun Nov 15, 2009 7:09 pm

I recently installed a 180 F thermostat from cummins because the old one was stuck partially open, and now the truck will heat right up when idling around town, unless I put it in neutral and goose it once which kicks it open right away. And on the highway at higher speeds it barely comes off the cold mark.I know one of the two jiggle pins are aligned with the groove in the thermostat housing. Any ideas?

I just replaced my Thermostat with a Cummins direct replacement. My thermostat always seemed to be sitting around the high side all the time (even when the truck was empty and the outside temp was below 50 degrees). I figured the thermostat was worn out and decided to replace it. The difference was huge! The temp needle now sits at the lower side of the gauge when driving with the same previous conditions. The highest I have seen the needle go is half-way on the gauge. Definitely worth buying the Cummins thermostat. The auto part stores sell some pretty low-quality ones.........at least from what I hear/read about.

Well I did buy the replacement thermostat from Cummins.Wasn't cheap either.(70 bucks Can.)It lso looked different from the three jiggle pin one that I pulled out.I have another old one (also three pin) that I may try.Under 1600 rpm this new one runs too hot,and above 2200 rpm it runs too cold.Had to cardboard half the rad so I could get a bit of heat on the highway.

Make sure that it is not in backwards. When I boughyt my truck the PO said he replaced the Thermostat. At idle it would run hot. Going down the road it was way cold. I bought a new Thermostat and when I put it in I saw that the PO had put it in backwards. The temperature sensing element was towards the rad. These things must have one hell of a water pump because evidently at higher RPM the water pressure must have been forcing the Tstat open!

I've had decent luck with the $12 t-stats from the local NAPA. I tried it in Rumblefish's truck, and it sweeps a little, but at least it closes.

I will agree about the Cummins t-stats being pricey. ANd the ones I've installed still did the needle sweep thing.

Depends on what you need too. I could live with a warmer engine considering this morning it is -14°.

I was down to the parents house one night. Truck was cold ( I live next door) so I left it running. She was pretty smokey, it was after 9 pm. My aunt called my parents. " What is running in your yard? Its smoking us out of the house." O well. I guess Im on the s list now. :D

Is there a good 190° thermostat out there?
