What Should I Run for Batteries

Postby Darren A » Wed Feb 03, 2010 2:48 pm

I plan on moving my batteries into the box of my truck in the tool box. I get free 8D and Group 31 batteries. Should I run 2 G31 batteries at 1000CCAs each of a single 8D at 1400CCAs.

Is 2000CCAs really needed for our trucks?

Most guys get along with a single 1000 or 1100 CCA battery just fine.

Just enough power to break everything behind the crankshaft.

I'm running a single 1000cca now and it doesn't last long in the cold when the trucks not plugged in, my 2wd wont start in -5 celcius weather. My 4x4 will start -10 no problem.

Maybe the starter is getting bad and drawing too much, Try swapping the batteries and see what happens.

My dually came with x2 65 series (Napa PN 7565 N) that have 880 CCA @ 0*F (1040 CCA @ 32*F). So 1760 CCA total AND they fit sideways on the stock 31 series tray. Even better, both cost the same as a 31 series (~$150 at Napa). Keep your toolbox full of space.

Damon, can I get a pic of your battery hold down setup? I'm thinking of going dual batteries and need an idea for a hold down. Thanks.

I can't do a picture now, as the engine bay is torn apart. However, the bar goes fore to aft. It's just a 1/2" wide bar that has a small bend in the end like an L. This small L end goes in a hole made on the front part above the headlight (IDK if this little hole was stock or not). The L points up so it's locked. There is a hole drilled into the other end (facing aft). A threaded rod is made into a J shape and the J hooks into the back of the battery tray. It goes up and through the hole. I need to do something a little different because it makes a squeeking noise.

I just reread this and it seems VERY confusing! I'll try to remember to drop the batteries in tomorrow and take a picture for you.
