Put spring in, MAJOR PROBLEM

Postby Bad93Cummins » Wed Feb 03, 2010 8:22 pm

Put 366 spring in, had it rev up on start to 2200, then did some adjusting and wouldn't start, then adjust it to 750, it'll rev to 1000 at first then idle down to 750 after a few seconds, but if you give it throttle past around 1300-1500 it'll rev to 2200 and stay there, what's going on?

Your throttle is indexed wrong most likely

it idles at 750 after a couple seconds, but if you give it gas above around 1500 it'll shoot up to 2200 or so.

Yep, sounds like you're indexed wrong.

Sounds like you need to back your fuel screw out some.

My 89 is at that point also. I have the screw in enough so at 1400 to 1500 it takes off up to 3600 at just a smidge of throttle. It will come right back down with no hang at no throttle. I would not want to put another 1/16th turn on it.

I 2nd the fuel screw. The 3200 spring has more tension, so it changes how it fuels. Try backing the screw out 1/2 to 3/4 of a turn, then see how it is.

Welll we also thought it might be the idle spring, we lost it when we took the pump apart and it flew across the shop but found another spring that fit perfect and thought it has been that spring, so you guy's think just back the fuel screw out?

Yeah back the power screw out, a lot of us do not even have an idle spring. You can count yourself fortunate that your truck did not run away after changing the spring and not backing out the screw before firing it up.

im talking about the idle spring inside the pump, the one that is on the pin that holds the gov. spring. We lost it and replaced with another spring we had laying around, so we think that's what's making the pump mess up, cause we even put the stock gov. spring back in and the pump still not right.

Richie- I've noticed that same quality on nonIC pumps that are operating normally. My 91 would rev to 3500 at no load right after the rebuild, with just a smidge of throttle just past 15-1600rpm. Took ~1/6 throttle to get to 1500, then about 1/32" past that, and it seemed to take off. It dropped back down to idle as soon as you released the pedal.

Bad 93- I'd third (fourth?) the notion of backing the fuel screw out. The not returning to idle is what leads me to that conclusion. Might not hurt to find a spring from another Ve to fit against your tophat, though that may or may not be the issue.

we backed the fuel screw out and it still hangs up, not as bad as it was before but still hangs up anything past 1500, but if you shift before 1400 and drops back down to idle like normal, also cold starts now it won't idle, it'll idle at 500, but we had the idle set at 800 and when warm it'll idle at 800 fine, but still hangs up past 1500 but not as bad as before, so we believe we have the indexing correct and the setting right, I just need the original idle spring(the one inside the pump, that holds the pin that holds the gov. spring inside the pump), as we lost my original one when we took it apart on the work bench.

Also we put the stock gov. spring in and still does it, so it has to be the idle spring inside the pump as we had to replace it with another spring that fit that we had laying around the shop, so it has to be that, so we ordered and new one and it'll be here monday.

if it isnt backing out the screw then its most likely the idexing, did you doccument the process as to put it back on the same notch? i know my shaft was marked between two teeht and i could have easily mixed it up.... that little spring on the top hat shouldent screw u up too much as long as the one that u put on wasnt softer
