1693 cat

Postby ahale2772 » Mon Feb 08, 2010 8:03 pm

so my dad and i picked up a running 1973 357 pete with a cat 1693, big double overhead cam beast, supposibly the only difference between a 425 horse motor and a 325 horse is the lack of an aftercooler on the 325 and some fuel screw on the pump turned up...anyone have anyexperience with this old dinosaur?

A '73 357? It's not a 359?

Never worked on one, but I've seen a few and heard even more stories about them from the local guys that used to run a 1976 359 in The Great American Truck Race with a 1693.

From what I understand they are a good engine with a good bottom end. It is a pre-combustion chamber engine in true caterpillar fashion at the time. As far as the difference between a 425 and a 325 you might be right, but I don't know.

Thats not a leak, its the external lubrication system.

I have worked on some 425 1693's. They aren't good cold weather motors I know that! The 425's were hot back in their day.

NICE truck for almost 40 years old. Might want to get some headlights on it before CDL testing- they are kinda persnickety about stuff like that.

I bet a 425 WAS hot back in the day.
