(Sorry about the screwy picture sizes, I went over my computer limits on the first one. If they need to be reduced or anything, just tell me mods.)

Just thought I'd show some pics of the installed turbo I've yet to get to run hard.

Image

I'd like to thank/hide from Soggy, a member here, depending on his attitude of me using the blueprints of his intake a few pages back in The Good Stuff.
I had to modify it quite a bit due to my non-intercooled injection lines having a different routing than an intercooled.

(Yes, I'm going to paint the valve covers and the other pipes :P)

Image

And here's the result of the first full throttle run the truck received after the turbo break-in period.

Image

Those were the rubber couplers from Airflo.com, and I assume that would be my fault for not checking the working pressures.

My next attempt was a local exhaust shop bending me a hard line out of 3 inch exhaust, but they never bothered to take off the old intake, so they never bothered to notice the 3rd dimension it needed to be bent to to miss the coolant lines.

Next will be some 3 inch Gates Green Stripe radiator hose. I figure if that doesn't hold I'll finally bite it and get some Silicone couplers.

Big thanks to everyone here for getting me to this level, I don't speak up much, but I read just about everything. :D

Hey, that looks pretty good!
I can tell you from experience that those hoses are rated for 15psi. At 40ish they swell up like a football. There is a dyno video floating around here someplace of mine all puffed up.
I don't think the radiator hose will hold either. Most cars don't run over 20 psi at the most in the radiator.

That must be a 3rd gen turbo? The intake looks nice :) We need some videos.

Also the air comming out of the turbo can be pretty warm. I had jury rigged boots on my 89 for a week or 2 before I switched to my s300 and it would melt and pop the one right next to the turbo. The ones later down the line would not bother. I ended up getting some better boots from Frozen Boost . com. They are wimpy looking but have held up.

Thanks for the site, Ritchie. I guess since I've got a direction to head, I'll go ahead and order some from there. At least I'll have someone to blame besides myself if those break. :P

How do you like the turbo?

Later on I plan on getting a 62/65/12 S300 with 4" DP.

From the little bit of time I've had to run it hard, I really like it.
As of right now, all I've got repairing the blown elbow is a 3 inch soft radiator hose, with a 2 inch non-collapsible radiator hose inside of it to keep it from completely pinching off.
Once my 3 inch silicone couplers get here, I figure It'll run even better than it is now, since according to my gauge it's only getting about 25psi to the manifold due to that damn elbow crimping up so bad. I'm just kind of babying it till the correct couplers get here.

I love the exhaust so far, besides the fact that I didn't bother planning ahead on a way to get it around my transfer case. Now I've got this horrible 45*dump right in front of it to keep the heat of my front driveshaft U-joints. It's so loud in my truck, I don't even get to listen to the new turbo I bought.

Re: 62/65 S300 Installed

Postby Tacoclaw » Thu Apr 29, 2010 7:56 am

Had a break at work so I figured i'd bump this with an update on my truck. I've decided there's no way I'm cutting up my factory grill, so I've decided to find another way to intercool this turd.

Image

The plan so far is to use the factory tranny cooler under the turbo to suck up the brunt of the heat, then use the AC condensor to get that extra bit of cooling. If the condensor turns out to be too much of a restriction to the water, I'll probably just have a custom radiator made to fit in it's place.

First time posting with a pic from my phone, if it sucks I'll fix it tonight at home.

LOOKS GREAT!! I would plan on the radiator but please keep us posted. While your truck is down you should think about redoing your intake plate a bit. Instead of the sharp 90* the air has to turn if you were to make a rounded piece for over the valve covers that transitions from round to square I think that would look a bit better and know it would flow better. Hope that makes sense.

I plan on something similar for the intake, probably taking a 3" 90*, making some relief cuts in the end, and hammering it over the top of the intake. However, that plan won't come into play until I get some different injector lines.

Besides, I kind of like my cowbell.

Another half-assed update.

I've got my cobbled-up bracing finished, so once my IP gets back from a reseal/366, I'll be ready to give this pig a dry run.

Image

Plans are still the same, but I've decided to go with a Meziere remote-mount 20gpm water pump. I'm also on the lookout for some quick-connect fittings. We've got them for hydraulic lines all over the place here, but I think those rely on pressure to get the volume through, so I'm gonna have to find some made for lower pressure purposes. I need them so it's not a complete PITA to change my air cleaner, but who's to say an ice box won't find Its way in there, since it'll already be set up for it. :D

PS. Thanks for the compliment Lectro. Those, along with comments and input are appreciated. Critisism on the other hand, will be ignored. Unless it's about my manliness, then I'll take it straight to heart and go out immediately to punch a puppy, just to prove you wrong.

One puppy down.

After looking around for a couple of hours last night, I found these bad boys.

http://www.usplastic.com/catalog/item.a ... d=redirect

Everything on them looks pretty good, besides the maximum temp, but another site had them listed at 250*. I figure, at 10 bucks a pop, I'll try them anways. I'm sure it's just a suggestion. I also found some of the same in stainless ones, but at $100 a piece, those are probably better left to someone putting them on their Bently.

Thanks for the link. :)

I think they're a bit small unfortunately. Probably a good thing, no way I'm letting anything that pretty under my hood.

My I/C has 1/2" female NPT outlets, so I'm kind of wary of constricting it down any below that. I'm going to drill out all the pipe fittings I use as much as I can, but looking at a 1/2" NPT male, that's still going to be a pretty small hole. I have a feeling that this whole ordeal is going to be pretty experimental at first, since I see no way that a 1/2" NPT is going to flow enough water to keep intake air cool. Worst case scenario, the I/C is aluminum, so it'll be pretty easy to drill out to whatever pipe I may need to use. I'm still eyeing the Colder discoes, but I think I'm going to have to forget about an internal valve and just get some flow through ones.
