Major dyno disapointment

Postby The_Head » Fri Jun 11, 2010 4:15 pm

Not sure if you saw my thread on DTR. I figured I would cross post it here to get more eyes on it.

http://www.dieseltruckresource.com/dev/heading-dyno-friday-t270974.html
182/440 in 3rd gear (uncorrected)
202/412 in OD (uncorrected)

They did not give me a graph.

I have a lot of work to do somewhere. Not even close to 275 uncorrected. The truck runs great though.

Dyno was a mustang dyno.

They ended up not charging me, which was cool though.

I did some of the things you guys suggested. I think I'm going to look into a new fuel filter, as I did not change it. The rear tires might of been a little low. They squished down a little when they hooked the truck up to the rollers. KSB was not hot wired.

I did swap out my BHAF with my old AFE (recharged it) and the truck got great mileage driving to Billings today.

I don't think it's getting the fuel it should be. When it dot dynoed, it didn't really smoke that much.

I got a new fuel filter coming tomorrow. It's the extra long Fleetguard unit.

I read the post from the other site and agree with some of them. ;-) Advance your timing and turn the fuel screw in. Those numbers are not close to stock numbers, from the factory they were rated at 160HP and 400TQ at the FLYWHEEL not at the rear wheels. :bh: You have everything you need for 275, try tweaking it a little and see how much boost you can get.

"High idle" screw unscrewed? Getting full throttle? Jam a stick on the pedal and check. Check the indexing on your pump linkage, remove the linkage from throttle shaft. Grab a side grinder, cut the high idle stop off, and the other annoying material hitting the pump. Then it'll probably hit the fuel inlet line, so gouge it there too. Reinstall, move the ball to the top hole. Linkage should point almost straight back at the firewall at WOT. ;-) Or check out getting full throttle from the VE on Dieselbombers. My mods added about 2 psi over just having the screw flush. And bump the timing at least 3/16.

Thanks guys, I will try some of the things you suggested. I cannot advance base timing however. The shop who reinstalled my IP used silicone and the pump is cemented at basetiming. That was the main reason I got the dynamic timing spacer from M&H.

If you do a search on DTR you will find my thread about my IP installation woes. I took it to a shop that IMHO I shouldn't have. It was beyond their capabilities. Or someone sabotaged something. I lost a set of DDP4's in that debacle.

I also really think my IP is one of the weak ones. It is turned up all the way.

Remp -
That's what I thought also until I was installed a 366 spring.
While the top was off I noticed the foot on the throttle shaft that the spring attaches to had about 1/8" more travel before it hit the pump wall...
I reassembled the pump as it was and as expected the 366 woke up the truck.
Then I took the top off and re-adjusted the throttle linkage so that WOT would allow that foot to contact the pump body.
Remember that last 1/8" ???
Picked up nearly 8 lbs boost and 10 mph on my GPS and just seat-of-pants feeling was super.

Lol, yep it made quite a difference! I double checked mine today, and my linkage is almost touching the inlet line and the pump. I guess it is bottomed out internally. 2 lbs was a conservative guess, as I only had a pyro when I did that mod. But from the seat of the pants and the pyro it definitely added fuel. Way more than I can use. Stupid little turbo.

My truck don't really smoke that much. I think the IP could be a little on the weak side.

My quit smoking - now it just hazes...Except for 1- 2 sec after you tromp the throttle.......
But my power screw is down 1 3/4 turns

You just put in the powerstroke intercooler, right?

Little things I am going to try.

1. Fleetguard FS1221 fuel filter. It's longer than a stock replacement. I believe you lose your WIF sensor though. No biggie.
2. Disable S300 wastegate to get boost up to about 40 lbs. Right now it's about 30.
3. Will probably check to see if my new Denny T is getting full travel.

We're not that different in setup and I regularly go over 55 if I disable my wastegate, I can easily hit 45 since my 'gate is set to 47. I'll bet you can also.

1. Larger fuel filter - standard fuel filter ----- as long as it's clean it shouldn't restrict fuel flow.
2. Disable the wastgate and try a quick WOT run --- BUT BE PREPARED to get out of it ...If you're only getting 30 psi I think the wastegate is set too low.
3. That's a definite possibility. I've noticed that with my new valet setup - which doesn't leak slightly like the old one - my pin does not move at all and I can barely make 32 - 34 psi. Pull your pin and slide a thin screwdriver into the hole to catch the little pin in case it decides to come WAY out, then open the throttle wide 2 - 3 times and see if the pin move out. Mine did NOT when I first put in my Ol' Smokey fuel pin. It doesn't move with the stock pin and a film builds on it keeping it from coming all the out.
If it's moving all the into the bore - about 1/2 way across or more, put a thin film of wheel bearing grease on the ramp and be sure the ramp is facing forward. Then go for a drive and hit WOT once or twice. Check the travel. I'd guess your not getting full travel.

Alright I did all the stuff today. I also adjusted the starwheel down maybe a turn. The truck runs much much better now. Throttle response is way better. I think I had the starwheel adjusted too high (I'm not a smoke kind of guy) so I wasn't getting all I could be getting out of the Denny T. I'm going to play with it some more tomorrow until I start seeing some smoke, if any.

Plugging off the wastegate got me about 7 more lbs of boost. It's up to 36 now. That's right in the middle of the map for that compressor wheel plus my headgasket should be pretty safe.

All in all, a very productive wrenching session for me.

im not saying that every pump is exactly the same (even though they should be) but i found that exactly 4 turns up from the bottom was where i could put my starwheel before my blue spring started to bind up.
