First Pull Many Questions.

Postby Ram360man » Sun Jul 11, 2010 3:10 pm

I'm going to be pulling my truck for the first time. Its a 1989 w250 standard cab with aluminum flat bed. It weighs in at 5700 lbs. All of my mods are in my signature. I'm guessing 200-225 HP and around 550 lb-ft. It has 3.07 gears and open diffs front and rear. Front suspension is stock. Rear has homemade adjustable suspension stops and ladder bars. It will be running in the local county fair in the 8500 lb stock truck class. I really don't know anything and any input would be greatly appreciated. I don't even know around what tire pressure I should run. My hitch sits at 17 inches. Max in the rules is 26. Should I get it higher?? The track is a harder packed one. I have 75% tread Courser LT Radials on steel wagon wheel rims. I also have 90% tread Chapparal A/P tires on aluminum rims. Both sets of tires are 33x12.5x16.5. Would the Chapparals be to aggressive?? Will the open rear diff be a problem? Should I just weld it? Its already suicidal in the rain with the aluminum flat bed anyways. What should I set the suspension stops at? Currently on the street I have them at 3 inches of travel so the tires dont rub on the bed. What gears should I run it in? Limit it to 2nd gear low range?? Should I take off in manual first to take some stress off the sprag? Any other input would help.

I'm also going to be pulling my 77 w200. Built 360 with around 350 hp and 400 lb-ft flywheel. Built 727 with stock converter stalling around 2000 rpm. Stock np203 t-case. Dana 44 front and welded Dana 60 rear both with 4.10 gears. rear leaf pack stock with one extra spring for 8 total. Front suspension is stock 3 leaf one ton packs (was a factory sno fighter) with two extra springs. Running 33x12.5 tires. 350 lb 3/8 bumper up front and 250 lb 3/8 bumper in back. weighs 5200 in total. Same track but in the 7500lb stock truck class. Any tips on this truck would help also.

Not looking at making a full blown puller. I'm only 19 and just want something to play around with. As long as i beat the kid who only made it 130 feet in his first gen last year i'll be happy. First gear low range with a getrag doesn't work to good for getting up to speed. He found that out pretty quick.

The thing that will help you the most is to get the weight closer to 8000lbs. 5700 is way too light and that is whats going to kill you. And I would probably say yes on keeping it in 2nd gear. Yes get the hitch up closer to 26". Set the bumpstops solid if the rules allow it or within 1" or whatever they state. Probably run the all terrains if its a good hard clay track.

Rules are as follows.

1. All stock no modifications
2. No weights added
3. Must be licensed & street legal
4. Pull off bumper or reciever hitch
5. Clevice needs 3 inch hole
6. Hitch 26 inches
7. Fuel only

The first one doesn't matter much. A chipped duramax that was far from stock won last year. I know they won't let me run any weights up front though. I could probably throw a bunch of crap in the cab but thats about it. 5700 was with the truck completely empty, full tank, and me out of it. Me in it is probably around 6000 with all the crap I have in it. If that.

The difference in weight between yours and a newer truck will be what kills you. Its pretty hard to beat a dmax that will weigh 1000 more pounds then you. There is a stock pull at a local fair and a 1 ton dump won last year. He was most likely over 9000 pounds empty.

I know i'm outgunned. I'm not looking to win or even place (although that would be nice). I'm just in it for huh? and giggles. I just don't wanna make a fool of myself. Any tips on how to get the weight up besides tractor weights and me eating a lot of Burger King. lol In the gasser class I might have a chance. Gotta put some new heads on her from Indy. Toppin a 1000 dollar short block with 175,000 mile RV heads doesn't make a good combo. Finally got some money to stick in it though. I'm gonna have to fab up a hitch for the 77 so that can be at 26. But the cummins is only at 18 still and I don't know how to get it any higher. Sorry about ramblin on guys. Just worked 3:30-2:00 and I've gotta go back in from 6:30-12:30. Just doing stuff to stay awake. lol.

Back when I pulled "stock" class most everywhere I went didn't allow weights. So I loaded up my tool box full of tools chains binders comalongs and other assorted crap to get me up to about 7000 or so.

I guess the most important thing to do first is get the hitch up there at max level and do some suspension mods to get rid of axle wrap. Do traction bars if allowed in your stock class or do a spring hanger upgrade to get rid of lift blocks in the rear. Up here a guy put an excavator bucket ( BIG ) in the rear of his truck. We all thought it was funny but they allowed it and he ran with it in there. :D

I didn't see anything about stock appearing front bumpers on there. So I would go find me some kind of heavy old hunk of steal I-Beam or something else heavy take my bumper off and hang it on there and call it my front bumper. I saw a guy that did it with a piece of like 24" I-Beam the thing was like 1/2 thick I have no idea how much it weighed but it did make the front of the truck squat pretty bad. Then I'd fab me up a rear hitch to be at the maximum height allowed. If more weight is needed I'd do what pulltilbroke said and throw as many chains and other junk in the cab and front of the bed as I could.

I didn't pull my '87 it was my DD and a gasser to boot. But I got tired of the stiff rear springs - my 18K 5th wheel would only drop the rear bumper 2 1/2" -
So I found some short 3' pieces of RR track ( 175 lb/ft ) - 2 pieces made the truck ride REAL NICE.....

About 4 pieces 3 or 4 ft long in your toolbox couldn't hurt

Well the pull was today. I got last but didn't make a fool out of myself i don't think. Pulled 166.5 feet. I was a little off on my weight guestimation. I weighed 5500 pounds with me in it. I never added weight since the rules said no weight. I ended up pulling the traction bars so they wouldn't kick me out. I showed up and all the other trucks had ladder bars and tractor weights up front. I guess the rules don't matter at all. I left the suspension stops in but at 2 inches since i can't get anymore adjustment. I ran my hitch at 24 inches and had my front tires aired down to 25 psi. I ran the rears at 37 psi. My truck had been running hot on the street so I backed the fuel screw down to 1 turn over stock. I thought the sled would make the EGTS higher but I guess not. I only hit 1300 degrees. I also disconnected the KSB which helped a little. I didn't like it sounding like my moms powerjoke though. I spun quite a bit out of the hole. I bumped it up to 2nd which just made them spin worse. My front drivers side tire was spinning real bad due to no weight on it. I got last out of 6 trucks. 5th place only beat me by a foot. I might try another pull next weekend. I ordered a 4 inch exhaust last weekend. I'm gonna put that on, more fuel, and add weight. I think it should do pretty good then. Maybe get over 200 feet. lol. A 04 dually cummins won the class. He was running courser stt 305/75s on all six. Made a full pull and was pretty cool. Made a lot more smoke then me. :)
