74 W300 gasser pulling vid

Postby bgilbert » Fri Jul 23, 2010 2:15 pm

Here's my first ever hook, for the truck and myself: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kPGHCobt3cM

It's a 74 Dodge W300 cab and chassis dually truck that I put a single wheel pickup bed on. It's got a 135" wheel base, 4" longer than a pickup. 360, holley 4 barrel, 4 speed and stock clutch, 4.88 gears, dana 70's front and rear. I think the rings might be bad, as you can see it had a nice oil smoke plume out the back. It also blew the dipstick out and a little bit of oil under the hood and on the intake. I also let out of it at the end, I think it might have had another foot or so haha. I looked out my mirrors as the truck was slowing down and seen all the white smoke. I thought it was the bed coming down on my tires, I figured well they're on fire I better let out  . At the end of the video you can see how far back the rear axle sits from the longer wheel base. I had fun and will do it again.

I wish I had a video of my 74 w300 440 truck hooked to the sled. It would be a good laugh. I think you could've hook yours to my truck and the sled an still pulled farther. The engine I'm putting together now should do a little better.

Thanks guys. Your 440 truck didn't pull it out the gate? Are you building a Mopar engine? After seeing a 396 Chevy in a 74 W200 and then everybody and their brother around here telling me how easier and cheaper it would be to build a big block Chevy, it's got me thinking..

I like the gasser pulls just as much. I like it. :D A guy up here has a 71 chevy that is just for pulling. He reved it up so high and dumped the clutch that the headlight popped out and was hanging by the wires. I keep wanting to do a gasser truck just for play. Add it to the " want " list.

Second pull for the truck and driver. Did a little better this time. 290 something feet. Didn't catch the standings but Nicole said there were at least four trucks that didn't go as far as I did 8) . http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T7J9ONiOZPA

Here's a twin to my truck, as far as the engine, trans, t-case, axles and gearing: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8nUawbsaSv4 .
It's another 74 W300 cab and chassis truck. 2 barrel carb though  . Evidently his clutch won't hold 2nd gear low range, so he pulls in 1st gear low range.

I did some pulling last week too. Its a 466cid 3000 rpm hot farm Deere. It spins out road gear in the 10000lb class, this was the 13000lb hook. The injection pump developed a governor problem that hook(pieces came loose) and made it want to hunt and that started it bouncing some. Still managed the win by 8foot on a very competitive class. :D

Thats funny Bill. I think this tractor is only about 1/1000th of the diesel related projects I have going on. I hooked it again last night and won by 20feet. :D Its kind of fun going 300+feet without the front wheels ever touching the ground. Sorry there are no videos though that I am aware of. I think a max wedge 440 with 2 650 holley 4bbls should wake that rig of yours up.
