transfercase ??

Postby redneckroot » Wed Aug 25, 2010 7:53 pm

In my quest for trying to acquire the parts needed to do some up grades to my 90 I've hit the transfer case snag. Talking a drive line guy I know he said that chevy made a 241 in the late 80's and early 90's that had a passenger side front drive shaft does anyone know anything about these? What they came in? What they run input/output shaft wise?

Option two is to find a front dana 60 from a ford and run a 241 from a dodge, but the question then is how to get the speedometer to work?

Most 241's have a speedometer drive gear just like a 205. I know of no right hand drop 242's or 271's. The cheapest way to upgrade your drivetrain would be to find a decent V-10 dodge and put your motor in it and if you wanted to keep the 1 gen look swap the body too. Then you have a dana 80 rear and a 241hd case if you get the right truck, plus a better riding suspension and all for less than what 2 axles and a t-case would cost you! :-)

241's are all driver drop as far as I know. 208 was aluminum chain pass side chevy case in the 80's. come in 27 and 32 spline chevy. can be found in full size jeep trucks with 23 spline input.

There is a RARE passengers drop Chevy 241 from early 90's Suburbans and crew cab 4x4 1 tons. 32 spline input.

Edit- 32 spline slip yoke output and I believe a 30 spline front output with a CV flange. A standard SYE kit should fit just the same for the rear. And some have electronic speedo and some are cable.

Also, IIRC, because of how long it's been, these were also found behind the 3/4 & 1 Tons that used the aluminum shifter housing topped SM465 manual transmissions that had the round 6 bolt attaching pattern to the transfer case.

That rings a bell Bob, very well could be. Now that you mention it, I'm going to have to go outside and look at the 465 I just pulled from a scrap truck last night. I figured it was a 208 behind it but I never cleaned the crud off to verify...

I recently found out the Chevy and GMC 4500 - 5500 4x4 trucks have a PASS drop NV273 divorced transfer case. They are the only Pass drop NV273 /NV271 cases I have Heard About. I read about converting a NV273 from electric shift to manual before but i can't find the thread. argh.. might be a option.. if not I would just built a stout 205, maybe with a np203 doubler.
Thanks,

I'm throwing a ford dana 60 front end under it so I can run a 241. I looked at a bunch of options and wanted to build it so I can get parts quick if I need them during the season.

WHERE have you been?! Have you not read about 1st gen pullers FLIPPING a 241 or 271/273? CaptainChrysler I believe is the guy on DTR that did with a 271. A puller buddy of mine with one of the top 1st gen pullers in the country flipped a 241DHD. This way you can leave your front axle alone. From what I remember reading, it wasn't too difficult to do.

Yeah I've hear/read about flipping one. But the truck I'm starting with is a 2wd and I already have a dana 60 from a ford sitting here.

Dodge had an NP241D in the 1988-1993 V-6/V-8 gas trucks and it's a DRIVER'S SIDE drop, of course.
From what I can see, some of the later 241DLD/DHD parts would interchange.

The 241's speedo drive gear assembly is NOTHING like a 205's.
In fact, it's MUCH BETTER, in that there is a much larger variety of options for correcting speedo readings that the 205 can't do, because of expensive of speedo drive parts that are hard to find.

Mark.

If you already have adana from a ford the option is a 271 its much stronger then teh 241 and the 205.. I would run that. if your worried you can use the abs sensor to run the speedo . I haven't done it but read about others doing that. 271 is much much better transfercase.

Since this seems to be the transfer case thread, does anyone know if one of those later model dodge transfer cases would bolt up behind a Getrag? I believe I read that the NV and 'Rag had similar inputs and outputs, but I want to check before I go too crazy.

I plan on running twins and there's no way I'm snaking a 5 inch downpipe between my 205 and the frame. I want to get rid of my 3.07s anyways, so I figure I could kill a few birds here at once.

I also plan on going with a Ford right side Dana 60.

you need a 29 spline input nv271. The Dodge trucks with standard trans had them. Also the Dodge nv271 had a slip joint for the rear out put. The 29 spline dodge nv271 normally bring big $ because of the 29 spline input. I prefer the ford nv271's because they have drive flanges instead of the dodge version. You can purchase and swap out the input shaft so I'd recommend swapping the inputs into the ford nv271 and then you have the best of both worlds. Also the ford nv271 seem to go a lot cheaper on the used market. It is possible to my the electric shift nv273 into a home brew manual shift.
Thanks,
