Rear springs for pulling

Postby BHD » Mon Sep 13, 2010 2:53 pm

I am finally getting my '78 W200 put together for pulling. I had to find a good frame and lucked acrossed a 1990 W250 CTD that was being parted out. I bought the frame and both axles for a really good price. The only problem is that it has a Skyjacker 6" lift kit on it. I plan on pulling the front springs out and replacing them with stockers, but what about the rears??? I would like to ditch the factory block and run a big spring pack but I thought I would ask you guys first. Any suggestions?

If your gonna be blocking the rear suspension you can get away with fewer leaves but this is what I run.

I plan on running street class or big block showroom, so no suspension blocks or ladder bars. I was thinking of buying two sets of 1 ton spring packs and combining them.

Is this gonna be strictly a puller, if so use as many full length leaves as possible and clamp them.

yeah, that's my plan. I figure on building a BIG spring pack and doing away with the blocks. And yes I plan to clamp them, and I am running a 33" tire.

i have a pulling truck and the rear is blocked and it hops no matter what i try. Could the blocking be the cause. and if so should i just go with the the stacked leaf spring and do away with the blocking.

Don't tell anybody but at one time I helped build a gas chevy pulling truck for the street class. They didn't allow traction bars or blocked suspension. I welded bracing to the rear spring perches off the frame and we took a cum along and pulled the springs down into the perches with the hangers removed. It pretty much made the truck solid suspension in the back as it had to bend the frame to compress the springs with the rear pivot gone. It hopped prior to that even running blocks, but never did it again after that! :-) Since it preloaded the hell out of the springs it also prevented axle wrap so it fixed the driveshaft angle as well.

I think I will try it with out the blocks and clamp the leaf paks and see how it goes. before i turned it into a pulling truck i hauled 4 1/2 tons of pea grave in it and all it did was level the truck out.
