Under the KSB question

Postby cougar » Tue Sep 28, 2010 10:20 am

How many and how thick are the original shims/washers under the KSB valve? The parts breakdown only shows two and doesn't give part numbers for different thicknesses. I'm asking for trouble shooting purposes. I'm still trying to sort through all of the possibilities of my timing anomalies.

I've seen one or two, never measured the thickness. I would think no washers would give you the most advance potential, considering how it always goes back to min advance when case pressure is lowest. Speaking of case pressure, have you tested yours?

No, I haven't checked the case pressure. How can you check it?
When I tried to install an M&H timing spacer a few months back, my engine suddenly ran like crap from idle up. Took it back off and it was happy again. My guess is the lower tension on the spring allowed some advance at idle. It should not have effected idle, but it did.
I finally got some timing tools and will try to check it tomorrow when it's not raining. At least it will tell me if the previous owner changed the timing and by how much. The pump is in the full retarded position so I can't turn it lower. I don't want to advance it because I think it is as far as it can safely go now. Checking it will tell.

I tapped the return banjo/ orifice bolt and hooked it to a 150psi air gauge. (pressure is pressure). Mine has about 50psi at idle, and runs up to about 110 at 3/4 throttle, which should be closing in on 3000rpm.
