4wd dragrace

Postby lopez dodge » Wed Nov 10, 2010 7:30 am

thinking of going to run the truck this weekend , so I particed a few lauches lastnight .Problem is there seems to be a fine line between bogging the truck off the line and melting the tires through 2nd and 3rd, was thinking of leaving in 4wd but am a little chicken about it . anythoughts?

Make the full pass in 4WD. Once you get past the finish line, slow to say, 70mph and shift back to 2WD. ;)

While I'm not sure if you have a manual or not, and I'm assuming yes due to the bogging comment, you may want to be pretty gentle on your first few runs. My front axle was walking down the track one side in front of the other during launches. The guy that stands at the tree was actually ducking away from my truck during my 2nd and 3rd launches.

It probably won't be an issue if you're able to slip your clutch a bit, but I was completely unable to modulate my pedal enough to attempt to slip mine, so I had a full engagement at whatever RPM I was launching at. It would put me back in the seat just enough when it started rolling that I couldn't keep the fine control.

Damn being short...

On a side note, if you do have an auto, I'd launch it's brains out in 4WD and never think twice about it.

Also, if you do get any accidentally nasty 4WD launches, go back in the pits and check your front U-joint straps. Mine were finger tight after just 2 launches.

If it's your first time I would recommend about 2000 rpm and riding the clutch for no more than a second and a half.
A quick and steady release is better than a hard pop.

Two seconds or more of riding it and you will start to smoke the clutch.

well went to the track sat. my best was 16.01 @88  . last run started off feeling like a 15 but clutch started slipping in 3rd so i lifted (this is my dd). but I had a blast. could use more fuel on the top end though, will definatly be going back next summer.

To give perspective,

I am a 2wd, stock trans and converter 1st Gen. Meaning, lightweight and high stall. Now, I have 40-60hp equivalent injectors, stock turbo, no timing bump. I have fuel pressure at 16psi PRE-FILTER and KSB hotwired. I netted 16.18 as a best. With your turbo and 4wd, I think even being a G360, I think 15.5's is possible...

I forgot to mention i am running a 35" tire on steel 3rd gen wheels , with a smaller tire I think I would have been well into the 15's
