Dana 70 3.07 limited slip

Postby KTA » Mon Nov 22, 2010 12:04 pm

I recently acquired a dually 3.07 rear end and have the intention of swapping it into my crew cab. I jacked up one side and it appears this 3.07 is an open carrier. Can I used any dana70 limited slip carrier with the 3.07's or is it special? I know a 2wd without limited slip is practicly useless so I need to do something.

If Philip does not pop in send him a PM. He has had a few of the 3.07's apart and has compared them to each other. He has the answer.

Unless something has been modified, a powerloc diff from an axle with a ratio numeric lower than 4.56 will work, provided the axle spline count is the same. So, 3.07, 3.54, 4.10 will fit. If your axle shafts use studs/cones to fasten to the hub, they sould be 35 spline count. If they use bolts instead, they are 32 spline count. Again, this is if the axle has not been modified.

Yep, same carrier used in both, it's just the 3.07 housing is different.

Carriers don't interchange. I will be in KY this weekend. I'll stop by and haul that scrap off for you. :D

Like a few people have said. Anything 4:56 and down will work. Just watch the spline count.

SCRAP!! Dually 3.07's are like a golden fleece. 8) I looked at the rear in my w350 cab and chasis and it is a limited slip, so I hope they both have the same spline count and then I can just swap them out so I have the ultimate 1st gen rear end then the dually 3.07 limited slip! That should really pimp out the crew cab. 8) Here is hopeing for a consistent 20+mpg!

It took me 6 months to find a 3:07 dually axle 10 years ago. It took me 3 months to find a 3:07 Dana 60 a couple of years ago. I know what its like trying to find them.

I won't tell you about the 3:07 C&C axle I have. Try finding one of them. :D

The 3.07 should be a 35 spline and I bet your 92 w350 is a 32.

Carriers don't interchange??!! Better change that Philip! lol.

Yeah I'm sure many of us would make the trip to the KY to haul off that gem.. or even trade for a much more sought after 3.54 LS D70 dually rear ;)  !

I've got two 4.56 c&c D70's, two 3.54 dually D70's and now a 3.54 LS dually D80 on my ranch. Not to mention the ones still under the dually trucks on the ranch lol. None of which are 3.07's  .

Trust me, if you want to move something heavy with it, and you have 3.07s, you will NOT like it. :?

I have no problems finding the 3.07 axles, because they are exactly what I DON'T WANT.
I have several SRW 3.07 rears and a front, here, that I'd GLADLY trade for 3.54 or 4.10 dually ones.

Personally, I feel that the 3.07 gear really isn't that beneficial, not when you have to move heavy stuff and you're stuck with a stone stock engine and a 5 speed.
I doubt it's even much help with a turned up one, even.

The mileage increases that I have seen have been negligible, if any, while towing.
A 6 speed "MIGHT" be a different story.

Man Mark, you must REALLY tow heavy! My 3.54 geared truck will idle out in 1st gear at 23000lbs gross, even on a grade. I don't see it being any problem with the 3.07's and besides the crew cab will probably not ever run over 180000lb anyways and will spend most of its life as a cruiser/grocery getter/outdoor getaway vehicle. If you are worried about power at speed then just run it in 4th instead of 5th and it is like having 4.10 gears only better since the tranny is it its strongest gear direct.

I'd LOVE to see one run 180,000 pounds, that'd be a sight!

The 3.07s just seems like chasing your tail for very little gain, to me.
Wind resistance will likely eat up any difference you could attain, mileage wise.
I could maybe see it in something light and used to commute, though.
But a 1 ton already equipped with overdrive... :?:

My best ever average high milage was 24.3 in my old 91.5 1 ton 5 speed, back in '94.
It had 4.10 gears.
It never dropped below 11 Pulling 20,000 lbs.

My old '96 (had a '91.5 engine) same set-up, with 3.54 gears would do 19 mpg unloaded, 9 loaded to 20,000.
SAME 2 car Kaufman trailer on both.

OOPS. To many zeros after midnight I meant to say 18000lb, heck I haven't even had my semi to 180,000lb yet. It did used to haul at 150,000lb though under an extended coal haul designation so it isn't out of the question that it has seen a 180,000lb load before. I know my yellow truck picked up 1mpg when I went from 3.54 to 3.31 gears. I think dropping it 150rpm is the reason for the fuel savings. I think the best fuel mileage is to be had at 1800 rpms and with the 3.07's that is about where it will be. Cat and Cummins have both always advocated for best fuel economy the engine should be geared for peak torque. I keep fuel logs on all my vehicles so I will eventualy know if the swap was the right way to go or not for me. I think it will be since I tend to drive fast 70-75mph it should help keep rpms below 2000 and according the the cummins fuel consumption charts is where you want to be.

Well I pulled an axle shaft out of my 92 w350 and you were right it is 1.350" 32 spline. What a light weight piece of junk! My 89 had 1.5" 35 sp in it factory and I twisted one of them off drag racing! If the 3.07 rear is indeed 1.5" 35sp then I wonder if I can use the side gears out of my dana80 tracklock in the 92's limited slip. Anybody ever tried that?

If the axle is retained with BOLTS, it should be a 32 spline shaft.
If it's retained with NUTS, with the tapered cones, it should be a 35 spline.

It's a mid-year 1990 change, like the lockouts.

It's the exact reason the pullers keep blowing up the D-80 Powerlocks, the 35 spline internals are the same.
