Mill out the AFC top

Postby thechoochlyman » Mon Jun 06, 2011 10:46 am

With the mods done to my truck, I'm still getting too much fuel with my Denny T stage II. I've got the starwheel all the the way up and flipped over, but it still lays down the soot when I have anything behind me. The smoke screw is all the way out - even with the "ridges" on the bottom of the AFC cap. Can I put this in the milling machine and cut that down enough to give myself more pin travel? How much can I remove before the bottom of the pin will not be in contact with the *ahem* "small pin that rides on the fuel pin?" :P

I guess the starwheel could probably come up a tad more, actually. I've just got it placed where it is still in decent contact with the clips on the inside of the AFC. Locktite perhaps?

Just went and checked out the travel of the pin. It doesn't look as if I can do much (if any) good by milling anything.

I guess I'll try some locktite on the starwheel and raise it a bit more.

Denny II has a pretty aggressive ramp on it...I have the same problem....but I think mine is because of the size of my turbo. I am thinking of trying my stock pin that I ground with a slower ramp...My ground pin and the Denny II both make 38lbs of boost....I to am learning about the star wheel..tried different adjustments...I may back off on my full power screw and see what happens...Mine is bottomed out.

The line on mine goes all the way to the top and starts where yours is at.

The most boost I've ever seen was 30 at WOT. I don't have my full-power screw anywhere near bottomed out, though. Just 1.25 turns in. I think my turbo is a lot of the problem, as well. I'm looking to buy an HX40 or HE351 sometime.

You could always screw an 1/8" pipe plug into the intake where the AFC gets it's air. :D

I replaced my banjo stuff with air brake line, and if I remember right I just screwed the pipe thread stuff straight into the aluminum. Block off the air, and see if it's not too much of a power loss to still tow with.

Yeah... I may end up doing that as well. I went ahead and put the old pin back in for now. I'm just gonna have to have more air before I can use it.

I turned my dennyt around to the flat side to see what it would do. Went from 60+psi of boost to mid 20s.

What else have you done to your truck? With an empty bed mine would max out at 30 at WOT. And now I'm 1/2 turn from runaway on the full power screw.

That was with the twinned truck. Not exactly the same as yours, but shows how much fuel the afc adds.

That would explain it. haha

I need to upgrade my turbo for sure. Either an HX40 or HE351. I may have to make a new thread for this purpose. But, I'm sure I'll be encouraged to get an intercooler first. In which case, I'll be saving up a bit longer.

Does it smoke when taking off or when you're already going and are getting on it? I tow heavy a lot with mine and can stop traffic with the cloud of smoke if I want. You need to practice self-control mainly. I always take off in 1st and wind each gear up pretty good before I shift and ease back on the fuel. It's nice to have the throttle response when I need it so I leave the pump opened up always. A more efficient turbo would definitely be nice though, 1 that lights quickly and yields less than 1600* egts.

Put a ball and spring style boost controller in the boost reference line, and set it for ~20psi or so, that way there won't be any additional fueling until you reach that set pressure.
