93 VE pump, sudden fuel leak and no start

Postby skeen550 » Wed Jul 27, 2011 2:06 pm

Truck was running great till yesterday morning, it was hard to start then sluggish to rev, I killed it and tried to start back up and no go.

I see fuel leaking under the truck so I check the pump and its leaking from the bottom at the rear by the pump head, looks like the oring between the head and pump body.

I try to start it again thinking a fuel leak is one thing but no start is another, and now it just almost starts but wont.

I checked the solenoid and its ok, with no power the truck is no start at all, with it on it tries and almost goes.

So I checked and plenty of fuel flow, I have a Carter electric pump.

It does get fuel thru the lines as I pulled them off and checked, but obviously not enough pressure to start it.

It then started to leak from the manual turn off lever on the side and then the top at the throttle lever seal itself.

Its like it has some internal pressure leak that is blowing fuel back into the case body and not all the fuel and pressure is going thru the pump and lines on the high pressure side.

I don't know enough about these pumps to guess but anyone seen this type of symptoms ?

The pump was pulled from a wrecked 93 truck, my setup is an 89, injectors lines etc.

Its been on my truck for right at 1k miles and no issues at all till now.

Any help would be appreciated !

I dont want to take this to a shop and get charged 800 bucks to reseal it :)

Thanks,

Scott

how much fuel pressure are you putting to the pump? check your oil for fuel. if it is all the sudden blowing out seals and leaking fuel, you may having a pressure problem, or i could be wrong and it just so happen to spring to seperate leaks

I dont have a real accurate gauge but it showed around 15 PSI

Thing is I just question two symptoms at the same time, leaks and then no start.

Might be sucking air in from somewhere, was prolly pulling it in while it was sluggish, when you cut it off it let air get into the system and now it wont start up, is there fuel at the injectors? (It should be a good shot each time the pump rolls to that line, if not, you've got a leak internally on the pump

It shoots fuel out as you spin it over, just not enough it would seem and it will almost kick over.

Thats my thinking, I have an internal pressure leak as it would explain the sudden leaks from 3 spots and the no start, I was hoping someone knew where it might be based on my symptoms so I could look for something in particular to do with the pump.

I am about to just pull it off and take it apart at this point.

prolly the best idea, with it leaking all over and not really knowing where its coming from, the rebuild kit is like $15, plus the gasket between the pump and timing gear cover. Pulling it off and putting it on arent very difficult at all, Ive heard the rebuilding of it isnt to bad, but Ive never tackled that part

So I took it off and found a local shop to take it too.

For 50 bucks they opeend it up and said they found nothing major wrong. Just the seals (as expected) were worn/damaged and that the throttle bushing was worn down.

Also the delivery valves needed replaced, but the guts of it were ok.

So for the low price of 1k they were happy to do that for me ... uh not.

So I am geting a seal kit, seen those on ebay.

But does anyone know of a place to order the throttle bushing and the delivery valves ?

The delivery valves may just need the springs replaced, need to look at em 1st but we shall see. Or maybe you can only buy them but as a whole assembly ?

Thanks!
