Speed-o problems???

Postby Jer12377 » Sat Aug 20, 2011 11:12 am

My speed-o would kick out once and a while before but, now it dosen't work more than it does. Where should I start looking to solve this?? I drive a 93 W350 5spd.

If your truck has cruise, does it work when the meter is out. If it does then its the speedometer. If not There is a 90degree adapter and a reduction gear box under mine and I've found it loose before. The speed sensor should screw into the reduction gear box, assuming that your 4wheel is set up similar to mine. Check and see if all of it is tight. Also check for a broken wire. If it all looks good then its probably the speed sensor.

No cruise, and I do have that gear reduction box on my transfer case. Can I get a speed sensor or is there any way of testing it? I still have to have my rear drive shaft balanced and install my new front so Im getting under there as soon as I get a chance.

It's likely it's the gear reduction box.
A simple test to see is to take the box off and run the VSS directly on the trans, if the speedo works, you found the culprit.

I went under her today and took the gear box and sensor assembly off. I also bought a new sensor cause the nut on the one on the truck had seen a better day. Although the box is cracked, it still works. However I have a few divorced transfer-cases from the early 70's Power Wagons I had and one has a aluminum reduction gear box with what seems to be the same ratio. It was seized and the square drive was broken off so Im in the process of fixing it. Oh and if you have a 93 and go to Advanced to get a speed sensor, they list it as 91 to 92 and only the automatic transmission sensor for the 93's.

They don't make the reduction box any more but, you can get the speed sensor that attaches to it. Advanced Auto Parts has the sensor, I don't have the link right now. The reduction box from one of my 74 Power Wagons I had with the divorced transfer case works. I have 3:54s and my 74 had 3:53s. If you can find someone with old parts grab the box. I had to rebuild mine cause the grease was all hard inside and seized everything but, I works now.
