47RH swap FINALLY

Postby cmann250 » Sun Oct 09, 2011 4:31 pm

Here's what I have:
-47RH plus converter
-Adapter plate
-Starter and flexplate

All that is going into my sig truck. '89, 2wd, regular cab, 727 trans

I probably could recite the DTR stickys from memory on the subject  I just want the swap to go as smooth as possible

So, what i need to know at the moment is:
Will the bolts that come out of my adapter plate still work with the 1" thicker 2nd gen plate?

Yes. It's only the outer edges of the plate that are thicker. Or longer actually. You should have talked to txs, Tom, (heavyset guy with the big beard) we had a good discussion going on about turning a 727 or 518 into a lockup trans. Even I understood it!

Not to change the subject but did I just hear that there is a way to make a 518 lockup?

Next question: What about trans cooler lines? What are my options? I know patching the existing hard lines with a hose of some sort will work, but i want to do it the right way. :;-|:

Upon further investigation, oil resistant hose isn't as evil as i thought. It will work fine for all the more i'm doing.

So all i have to find out yet is what length the driveshaft needs to be cut to. I'll measure when i get there, but just out of courisity, has any one here gone from a 2wd 727 to a 47RH in a regular cab

Thanks to everyone that's helped me get this far

Update: The 727 is out and we ran into the first problem, but it isn't major. I think. lol

The output shaft of the 47RH is splined and from what i'm told, the 2nd gen yoke just slides in and the carrier bearing and rear U-joint keep it from sliding out. The 727 appears to have the yoke bolted to the output shaft, like the yoke is on the rear differential.

Just thinking out loud here (i would like a confirmation from some one that knows more than me ), if i got the 2nd gen yoke, then i'd be good. I bet i'd end up needing the whole U-joint unless Dodge was kind enough to use the same U-joint, but different yokes throughout the years.

Unfortunately for me, most people have 4x4's or 518's and there is little 2wd-727 to 2wd-47RH specific info out there

You need the driveshaft out of second gen 2x diesel truck, illiana may have one, or you could spend big bucks and get a new one for the 1410 joint.
there are pick and pulls around indy but i have never been to one.
93 w250 6 speed 4" exhaust, caution, work truck, she's no beauty. building 1 ton dually 4x4, dana 80, 48rh, 205 Scratch the one ton, bought frt. dually 4x4 98 12 valve with the tiny rear doors. rides so much better than the 93.

I'll look around and see what i can find. Thanks txs

Does it have to be from a 2wd? I havent ever been under a 2nd gen to see how their transfer case hooks up. Or would a driveshaft out of a 2wd regular cab 2nd gen be the perfect length? That would be sweet :D
EDIT: it DOES have to be from a 2wd

I found a driveshaft out of a 1 ton 47RH truck that is 4x4. It is diesel. Will that work?

From what i could find, the 47RH has a 29 spline output shaft. Also i found 1 ton dodges sometimes used a transfer case that used a 29 spline output shaft. Is this true? If so my problem is solved :alien:

EDIT: The 47RH does have a 29 spline output shaft, but the transfer case of the truck i got the drive shaft out of was 32 spline

We got the 47RH in today. I still have to wire it up, get a driveshaft made, connect cooler lines, and such. A drive shaft from a 2wd manual 2nd gen won't work, it's 23 spline.

I'm kind of talking to myself, but if this info helps some one out there, good

Yes, it's 2wd, 727. If i had 4x4 or a 518, it would go alot smoother. Either way, you should be able to modify your existing driveshaft. I have to combine two because the 727's output shaft is different than the 47RH/518 output shaft. A 518 makes it easier to modify your trans mount, the only difference in length is the 1" thicker block plate.

I hope that helps a little 8)

That's what I was thinking was needed. I just want the lockup convertor to help with mileage.
