Yes, thank you Mr. Mark! That would be the kind of thing i would forget. I would have thought the 47RH gear would be tho one to use.

For those keeping track, i thought i'd give some driving impressions. I really like the fact that i can carry a conversation on in the cab at highway speeds just because O/D and lockup make such an impact on engine rpm's. Also with the 3.07's, the jump from 3rd to O/D is pretty big and i have to run 3rd out pretty far to avoid a big black cloud that is the result of the O/D shift. The 47RH is obviously a much tighter transmission and it just feels like the truck has so much more torque now.

The reason that i don't have any fuel ecomony numbers to share is that my speedometer/odometer don't work for whatever strange Dodge reason. Mark left the speedometer gear in the 47RH when i got it from him, but it was electric and my '89 has a cable speedo. I now have 2 speedo gears, one long shaft, one short, and the long shaft one is the only one that is the right length to work with the part the cable hooks onto in the trans. It has 26 teeth and the shorter one has 31 teeth. I assume that the 31 tooth gear came out of the 47RH, but i'm not sure. I should have paid attention when i took everything apart  I'm pretty sure JQmile had to use a 31 tooth gear to get his speedometer accurate again after he went to a 47RH.

Can someone help me make sense out of all this?

The 47RH needs a rebuild it was giving him problems in OD and lockup.

cmann250,

How is that slip yoke from PATC working out for you? I'm currently trying to put a 47RH behind a 6bt 12v Cummins in a 1971 Ford F250. I'm having issue finding a slip yoke. The PATC website shows their slip yoke is for a 1990-95 A518. But I believe the 47RH (aka A618) is the same as the A518. Before I shell out the $135 I'm trying to get a feel for it being the right part. Any info you can share would be appreciated.

The PATC slip yoke uses a lighter U joint, but I'm not sure what series it is. My stock shaft uses 1410s and this joint was considerably more puny. I didn't have an issue, but if you plan on off roading, racing, pulling, or running the truck hard on the street, I'd find a 2nd gen driveshaft and use that joint. Any driveshaft shop should be able to fit splice and rebalance a shaft. The slip yoke from Dodge is something like $3-400.

If that truck you're building has a VE pump, stick around and introduce yourself :D

Thanks for the info, fellas. Gives me something to think about. I'm not doing any of this work myself. I don't really have the know-how or time and I definitely don't have the tools. I have a friend doing the work. He build custom automotives. I'm trying to find a stronger yoke but I'll use the one from PATC is all else fails. It woud probably be fine for my application but some times you just want to be sure. Here is a short video of the Cummins running in the Ford.

http://youtu.be/AXixYPNdgoQ

I bought the truck earlier this year. When I had my friend come by to give me an estimate on body work and paint I off handily said I'd love to get a diesel in it some day (it had a 360). About 15 minutes later I asked him where he thought we should start and he said to put the diesel in it. I know I love the sound and power of a diesel. But I don't know much else. So I started researching and decided a Cummins was the way to go. I found a 1989 Dodge D250 to be the donor truck. Paid $1900 for it. The engine had 189,000 miles on it and didn't smoke out of the oil filler like others I had looked at. It is a 1st Gen.

I'm putting a 47RH transmission in with pressure switches to control the OD and LU. Also have toggles to disable OD and LU completely. I'm also sticking the 3.54 rear end out of the donor under the Ford. The Ford had a 3.73.

That would be great to see the pictures from the beginning to the end. My other truck is a 1991 with a 727.

Thanks for posting this thread.

I got great news, I just got offered a complete A618 from a 1994 that was in a roll over. :D

At 750 clams, I think that I am doing well. I will get all the parts I need for the conversion. Is that a good price? Or did I jump the gun here?

If it's a guaranteed runner and you can swap it right in, I think that's an ok price. I bought the transmission for less, but I had to have a drive shaft made. All said and done I had close to $750 wrapped up in it.

Tomorrow I go on the road trip to see what I got. I am hoping for the best.

Did your transmission fail shortly after you installed it? Or did I read that wrong? And did you fix it back up? What parts do you recommend if I need a rebuild? Is there a supplier of robust parts out there? I know a lot about 727's and the gasoline A518's, but not much about these..... This is my first rodeo... So to speak, my first diesel experience.
