Finally Bought A Car (Updated: Pictures In First Post)

Well, after many months of searching I finally came home with a car today. It's a 2002 Subaru Impreza Outback Sport. It has an automatic tranny (for Dallas ), 176,xxx miles and of course awd. I'll be doing the timing belt immediately, but from the car fax the owners had the car serviced very regularly and everything works perfectly. It rides a hell of a lot smoother than my truck and it gets about 28mpg which isn't too shabby. I had to drive to Richmond, Ky, which is about 100 miles (and about 2 1/2 hours) from me but it was well worth it. I wrote a check for 4,850 and walked out the door with it. I may have paid a little but too much but this one was the only one for sale even remotely close to me so I figured I'd jump.




















It's been getting a pretty consistent 25mpg with mixed city/highway driving. With 87 octane only $3.08 here and diesel being $3.69, I'm pretty happy with the car. Sorry for the crappy pictures though, I still haven't been able to figure out the settings on my camera to deal with sunlight and such.

That should work out fine for you Parker, there pretty easy to work on, and you can expect over 30
mpg on a long hwy run, and avg 24 on back and forth runs to town, plus the AWD in a subaru is unbelievable.

I really like it, but more importantly Dallas loves it. She can drive it easily, park it easily and is very comfortable driving with our son in the car. The car is very dirty in the pictures but I'm not going to wash it just for it to get dirty in an hour on our roads. When winter is over (or closer to over) then she'll get a bath along with my truck. My favorite thing about the Scooby so far is my truck hasn't had to be driven in the salt.

We've had the car for 8 days now and I've driven it over 1,000 miles. I check the mpg every time I fill it up (I'm keeping a spreadsheet in a notebook I keep in the glovebox) and it's been averaging 24.5-25 mpg ever time. Not bad, and it's a mix between back roads, city driving and interstate. 87 octane is a lot less expensive than diesel too so I won't complain about 25mpg. In about a week or so I'll be doing the timing belt along with new spark plugs, air filter and transmission fluid. I'm hoping that'll give me a few more mpg. Also it's been storming quite a bit here and the AWD has come in handy quite a few times. I'd really love to have this car with a 5 speed manual.

Me and Barb are going back and forth about a manual in our next Sub, i know you could
add 2-4 mpg but it's also nice to just put it in d and go, we both have drivin sticks
quite a bit so thats not a factor, of corse i want an XT model (turbo) 5 spd but the
MPG's suffer quite a bit with one plus my driving habbits wouldn't do it any good.

i will probly just look for the color, options, milage, price range, we want and if it's
a stick then so be it.

Yeah it's a pretty decent neighborhood. We've got a moronic home owners association but the President is a nice guy and lets most of the stupid "rules" slide. I have a feeling our neighbors don't like us very much though, my father has a straight piped '97 12 valve, my oldest brother has a straight piped '97 (although he moved to Missouri to work for Harts Diesel) my other brother has a straight piped '03 and I have my straight piped '91. My father usually leaves for work at about 6 A.M. and I usually leave about an hour or so after him and when it's cold we leave them idling for a bit. One of my neighbors has a straight piped 7.3 though so at least he doesn't get upset.


Dar, I hear you about putting it in drive in go, but I aint an old man yet so I don't have to worry about that. Honestly though, I just prefer the reliability of a manual, especially when the car has almost 200K miles on it. My brother that has the '03 has been looking to sell it and buy a Forester XT model and swap an STi turbo and tranny in. It's supposed to be pretty easy and the little wagon would boogie.

Now that I have something to drive when my truck is down I need to decide if I want to rebuild my transmission with Goerend parts or swap an NV4500 in... I'm leaning towards a Goerend tranny and I'll probably just buy a 5spd truck later on down the line. My truck is to nice (I think so anyways ) to cut a hole in...
