Junkyard Volvos=Gear Vender?

Postby Rug_Trucker » Wed Apr 18, 2012 6:59 am

Do I need to start checking Volvo's for a Gear Vender OD? Are there parts to adapt them to our trucks? And will they handle the power?

Gracias!

I, personnaly have never heard much bad about gear vendors, they claim to handle alot of power. My brother runs one on his 02, really likes it. ;)

There are 2 types of gearvendors units, a P type and a J type.

I cannot remember which one is which but when i talked to GV they said the Volvo units will not hold up to towing.

I dunno' but here lately, I've seen a lot of GV stuff for sale that "needs repair" or something's broken or missing.
From what I understand, it's like pulling teeth to get GV to even do something about fixing them.
Been that way for years.
IMO, if a company won't sell parts, or support their product, they deserve to go belly up.

The unit my brother has on his 02, we got used, the control box was bad, but the actual over drive unit was good. All it needs to shift is 12 volts. So I wired up its own relay, on/off power and push/pull actuation switch and it works great. Got less than $1k in it

I bought a used unit that basically had nothing with it. I purchased all the parts needed from GV and didn't have any issues. They support parts no problem, not sure about repairs though.

You have to send it in to be repaired.

Where does the GV mount? AFter the trans? Will it work to give an auto even higher gears on the hwy?

If its 2wd it mounts to the back of the trans, 4wd on the back of the t-case. There is a divorced mounting option aswell. Yes it gives a greater OD to autos aswell.

That looks like a lotta extra weight hanging off the back!

Its actually not very heavy. ~40lbs

If you think about it, the whole t-case (200lbs?) is hanging off the back of the trans itself.

That's true about the TC, but it's fairly close to the mount. The GV sticks way out. 40 lbs isn't much though.
