Postby bighroder » Wed Nov 14, 2012 8:24 pm

Hey guys I'm building a compound setup for my engine I was thinking about doing hx35/ht3b but a friend at work said he has a turbo thats reman I can have if I can use it my dumb question being a newb is where is it that you measure the exhaust housing hx35 being an 18cm? What should the atmospheric turbo exhaust be to spool correctly please dont burn me to bad I'm still learning, don't get to hop up trucks much at work (semi mechanic) oh the turbo is from an n14 cummins dont think that helps much thanks for any help

I can't help you on the exhaust housings. A picture may help more experienced people though. After you see a few, you can just tell.

As far as primaries go, I'd bet that turbo from an N14 would be good. The HT3B that's so popular is off an 855, so that turbo is likely a close cousin. 20-22+ cm^2 seems to be the tightest housings for primaries that work. No need to reinvent the wheel, see what works for other people and copy ;)

Im not trying to reinvent anything I'm just seeing if what I have can be made to work instead of buying an ht3b that cost 500+ thank you for letting me know what it came off from I was wondering that too but didn't want to ask, I appreciate the reply

You haven't said what you're going to do with the truck.

I've run an HX35/Hybrid with a waste-gated 14 exhaust housing over an HT3B with a 21cm housing (IIRC). The voices in my head concur that with those turbos, the older DDP4 injectors were at the top of acceptable fuel, meaning, wound-up @ WOT, the exhaust was NOT heavy-black, . . . perhaps dark-grey. It's all muddied by the fact I also ran a slightly better than stock IC and fancy intake feed-horn. EGTs were well past 1450*F at the top of the eighth with a little 50/50 W/M.

The above was observed at the drag-strip. It's been a while. I'd have to dig it up over at the DTR. :?

Sooo . . . . .. what'cha doin with the truck? Weekday grocery-getter / weekend warrior? Required work-truck / county fair puller? etc . . . . . .

Anything with an HX35 is going to spool pretty decently. Your engine will still run off the spooled HX's air even if the primary hasn't come into play yet, so a twin set with an HX won't be that lazy regardless. You might not have 400 horse on tap, but you'll have ~220 or so just slightly slower than a normal HX truck.

The HX35 has a 12cm housing, not an 18cm. It's also typically wastegated, which you'll kinda need for a twin setup. Drill out the wastegate port as big as you dare that the flapper will still cover and take it into both runners of the housing. That will help you out on adjusting your setup regardless of what primary you choose.
