I have a friend who's pump took a dump in his '93 and he recently replaced it. I've not been involved in the whole process, so I'm not exactly sure what he's done before today.
He removed the pump with the key at 12 o'clock and installed the new one the same way. The pump looked pretty pulled back to me and there was no timing marks on the pump, even though every one varies. Where the pump sat (pulled back) the truck wouldn't run unless he gave it a snort of ether and dies after a second or two. I started to push the pump up some and the truck ran better the farther we pushed the pump up. It still required ether to start. With the pump pushed up almost to the point where it was touching the head, the truck needed ether to start but it wouldn't idle. It would run fine in mid RPMs and with the hammer down, it would sputter, smoke white, and almost die. The white smoke smelled of fuel, making me think the timing was late. Could he have some how backed timing up when installing the pump?
What do you guys think? What went wrong here?
