Pump timing and installation questions

Postby cmann250 » Sat Jan 12, 2013 4:46 pm

I have a friend who's pump took a dump in his '93 and he recently replaced it. I've not been involved in the whole process, so I'm not exactly sure what he's done before today.

He removed the pump with the key at 12 o'clock and installed the new one the same way. The pump looked pretty pulled back to me and there was no timing marks on the pump, even though every one varies. Where the pump sat (pulled back) the truck wouldn't run unless he gave it a snort of ether and dies after a second or two. I started to push the pump up some and the truck ran better the farther we pushed the pump up. It still required ether to start. With the pump pushed up almost to the point where it was touching the head, the truck needed ether to start but it wouldn't idle. It would run fine in mid RPMs and with the hammer down, it would sputter, smoke white, and almost die. The white smoke smelled of fuel, making me think the timing was late. Could he have some how backed timing up when installing the pump?

What do you guys think? What went wrong here?

Is it possible to take the oil fill tube off to see? :?:
Sounds like there might still be some air in it as well

If I rolled cylinder 1 up to TDC compression and the timing pin fits in, then timing has to be close, right? If not, something didn't go right on the install I figure.

It is possible that he is 1 tooth retarded on timing. I would think you need to have the pin pushed in BY TDC.

It's really easy to mess up that half moon key and have the timing off with just that, pull that oil fill tube and see how many threads of shaft is sticking out from the nut. The key will mash out the back side of the gear and have the timing off like jumping a tooth. I've see a dude do this to one and I've done it on a vp44 pump

I think it's easier to pull the front cover and make sure what's going on when installing a pump. That gives you a chance to check the kdp and case bolts as well.

Been thinking on this... If the pump was just installed on the key hole at the 12 oclock position,( not set to tdc) The gear in the case could be a half revolution off on the gear?

I still think you're close.

Any one else know if it's possible to get the pump to fit the bolt holes and keyway, yet still be a a tooth retarded? I think that's what's up.

It is impossible to get the timing off with the relationship of the gear and pump.... assuming the keyway is in and properly seated and the timing marks are as were before.

The only way to get the timing off is if one were to skip a tooth on the timing gear.

But if you installed the pump and it looks to be in a retarded state from before, then by all means advance the timing to where the pump is sitting from before.

Now there are allot of internal timing things that can happen, if the pump was rebuilt wrong or to a diff. spec as the one it was replacing.
