Balancer Removal?

Postby NOT_A_BLAZER » Wed Feb 17, 2010 9:25 pm

I'm working on my '91 Cummins, trying to fix the KDP but I've run into a roadblock....

I'm trying to remove the balancer, but the bolts won't budge! I even removed the radiator so I could get to it with the impact (which opened up a whole other can of worms) and only got one of the bolts to come out. Anyone else have any problems with this?

I have only done 1 and they all came right out. I guess try pb plaster or something and be patient. You sure don't want to bust them.

There should be a notch on the out side of the balancer. I put a round dowel from the notch to the cross member so it can not rotate. Use a breaker bar to get them loose and prevent the engine from spinning.

Make sure you use a 6 point impact socket to prevent rounding the bolt head.

Also when your doing the KDP check the bolts behind the cam gear. Turning the enging over should get you access to all of them. I had 2 of the 3 hand tight.

Sometimes you have to rock the bolts out by changing directions on the impact wrench. Sometimes I use a 3# brass hammer to slug a box end wrench again using the rocking method. This gives a better feel of how tightly frozen the bolts are. Getting a bigger impact is some cases will work but you have a better chance of snapping the bolt off because it is not possible to actually judge the amount of torque that you are actually applying.

When I did mine I had to have the engine locked (well,4-lo in first with blocks under the wheels) and I used a big cheater to get the leverage out from in front of the rad...a buddy underneath holding the socket tight doesn't hurt either....

Nope! Throw it on and away you go. :D I put a chisel in the notch on mine and braced it against the frame or something to loosen and tighten. I actually torqued mine when I put it back on.

They only need to be torqued to 100 ft. lbs..

I'm sure this sounds stupid but which notches? There's some notches on the outer edge of the balancer, you're not talking about those are you?

Your 91 will not have the notch that Pete's 92 has. Only trucks with a crank position sensor has the notch. :D
