Roadtrip Checklist?

Postby pulltilbroke » Thu Mar 11, 2010 1:03 am

Well looks like my old pile of junk is goin on a fairly long roadtrip (1500 miles) to go possibly drop off some parts for a board member then goin to pick up a garden tractor and front axle for the 60K10.

Is there any thing other than the usual I should check on a 350,000 mile truck before I'm east bound and down?

BTW I'm goin to Peru IN then down to Louisville KY then up through ST Louis MO and home from there.

The usual consists of

1. Fresh oil change
2. Change or top off lube in the tranny, t-case and diffs
3. Valves have been set
4. Wheel bearings were inspected and packed in early December
5. Brakes all look good
6. Turn the fuel down a smidge for mileage[duhhh]

I will have tools, a spare belt and tensioner and fuel filter, an assortment of jumper wires, oils, coolant, and a multi meter a carton of smokes, duct tape, and bailing wire.

Feel free to add as you see fit

I always worry about the " turney " stuff on the engine. A alternator and water pump too if you have them. I have had both of those seize and rip the belt off. Being a standard I would not worry about a spare starter.

The alt is fairly new, but I supose I could toss a spare pump in, I just rebuilt the starter last fall so it should be good to go. the linkage looks real good too, I picked up a real good one from Mark when I switched over to the I/C bracketry.

I also got a spare volt reg behind the seat.

I don't mean to poop on your ider of beeing prepaired but if you took a spare everything but
one thing thats what would break, just check things over and go. I took a trip out west in 2002
with my family we were gone 32 days and went 11,050 miles in a brand new jeep cherokee 60th
aniversery it had 7,000 miles when we left, it broke down 2 times one time the aircondition comp
locked up and then in yellowstone smoke started rollin out from under the dash
but we made it back home fine and still it was the trip of a lifetime. :)

give your hoses a look for
bulges and such. wiggle your fan cluch, windshield wipers? headlights, breaklights, the two
most important lights no dought, well for you,--- mine is the light in my EGT gauge for nightime
driven. tire PSI. I would still give those wheel bearings a quick jiggle.

Wipers were new in December, I'll check the fan clutch. Had the front end apart a few weeks ago it all looks good, tires are decent and will check pressures when I leave, 07 date on the tires. Light will get inspected before we leave and at fuel stops.

hey-Hey!!!,
There is no way to be prepared for all failures...:) Even so, some things don't take up much room at all, for instance a list of Cummins parts suppliers along the way. That and a AAA package that will tow you some distance would cover the big stuff. You've listed the big stuff already, perhaps add a bit of hand cleaning supplies. Ov course you realize that carrying a big pile of spares increases the likehood of a failure...heh-heh-heh. Anyway, looking forward to hearing you needed none of it.

On 'things to check', examine water/acid level in your battery(s). Seems my flooded-cell ones are always low, but sealed sorts like Optima don't have this issue.
cheers,
Douglas

Make sure you got a flashlight with a good battery. I keep a hat in the truck with the little LED lights built in to the brim, that thing is super handy. I also keep a 6 volt LED flashlight in the truck so I can save the hat battery for when I might really need it.
