I've been told by an extremely reliable builder that recently there are other companies that are WAY better than Cummins has "sunk" to.

I'll try and get the name of the company he uses.

Clevite bearings, felpro everywhere but headgasket. For that I've been told Cummins marine gasket,I don't know the reasoning behind that tho......could be that there is some mystical voodoo in it

no such thing as a cummins marine head gasket, just a 6BT head gasket.

According to Cummins there is. I was just talking to local Cummins dealer about this.

I didn't get the part numbers I called for pricing. First question he asked was marine or standard engine since the marine engine runs a slightly different head gasket.

Found (thru a google search) these part numbers for different thicknesses from Cummins.....
12V head gaskets 3283335 STD 3283337 010 3283339 020.

From what I've read the thicker headgaskets was used on the marine applications

some marine engines run a thicker headgasket stock to slighty lower compression. Many refer to a 20 over cummins headgasket to a marine head gasket for some reason. A 5.9 12V long block is the same internally (with some minor variations) across the board up until the STORM block.

Cummins Northwest wanted me to buy a .10 over when I did my headgasket. So, yes they make diff. thicknesses.

I know the gentleman who would be building my short block. Uses a different aftermarket piston that has a "better heat sink design" with a thicker bowl ridge and lowers compression from 17.9 to 17.5.....then run a standard thickness gasket. He said that nets better h/g reliability when one is using o rings (better bite) and yet still produces the same end result as a thicker gasket but with a better design piston that won't melt quite so fast.
