Manual Shut off indexing

Postby 89dudney » Wed Apr 23, 2014 6:58 am

My pump was resealed a month or so ago and my manual fuel shut off lever was indexed in the wrong location. I tried to turn my pump up a little bit after it was resealed and when I turned the fuel screw in one turn, my truck was runaway. I turned the truck on and it went full throttle. I had a buddy standing there with a board and we got it shut down. As of right now it is one turn lower than stock. What I am needing help with is re-indexing the manual fuel shut off into the correct location. I do not have anything to reference off of. Thanks in advance.

Remove your shut off lever and return spring.
Turn the shaft with your fingers in the direction it would normally turn to shut down, til you feel it bump the gov assembly. You will want to install the shut off lever on the NEXT set of splines after you bumped the gov. This will ensure adequate pressure against the governor when shutting it off.

I had a pump shop do tht many years ago on my mom's jalopy. It was a year or so later when I discovered it. That, combined with 2 injectors from a set magically fixing themselves while sitting on the shelf for a year, has ensured I will not be patronizing that business again.

What makes you think it is indexed wrong? Cause it wouldn't shut the fuel/truck off when it was at runaway?

Because before the pump was resealed I could turn the truck up and had 2 turns on the fuel screw, and after it was resealed i couldn't go more than 3/4 turn and it would runaway

Could the fuel screw not been put back in the same location after reseal? How many threads are now sticking out? Keep in mind, not all pumps are the same or act the same after tweaking them, and once the fuel is turned up so much the shutoff lever can be ineffective.

I backed it out half a turn. I will count the threads. How many should be sticking out?

Depends on the pump. Usually it's four to six threads that are exposed when the collar is on the screw IIRC...so maybe eight to ten?

Maybe the linkage is indexed wrong? If you bottom the fuel screw before it runs away, you can bump a spline on the throttle shaft and it'll move something in there.

I think I got it. I turned it all the way to the right, and then I put the lever on the shaft, turned it back to normal position plus a spline and the truck acts totally normal now.

Thanks guys. Its runnin good now, other than the fact that I have no adjustment in my fuel screw. A 1/4 turn in from "stock" ( where the fuel screw was when I got the truck) makes the truck self-rev. I dont know what I can do to fix it but It would be nice to bury my pyro quicker. :D :D :D
