Diesel Leak From Front Driver Side Under Pump

Postby Diesel » Thu Jun 19, 2014 10:18 am

I have to assume that if diesel is dripping onto the ground from around the front of the engine, over the transmission lines, and down to the ground, that my injection pump needs a reseal? If so I'll hop on eBay for a kit now. If not, what else do I need to replace?

Is this usually all it takes to stop the leak:

I would try to locate the exact leak first. If it is the pump, then a total reseal would be a good idea ;)

Ok sounds good. I'm good with doing a total reseal regardless. I assume the front timing cover comes off to get the pump off?

Nope. Just pull the oil fill "elbow", it spins right off. Rotate the engine over using the alternator pulley nut until the IP keyway is at your 12 o' clock. Comes right out with a little English.

Not quite sure on that, but I think I may hold the "pump swap" record during SOP 9. Got er down to 40 minutes....at a casual, beer tipping pace ;) I did three swaps and two disassembles that day... And still have a very unique pump "signature"

I can do a step by step deal-e-o how-to for you if you wish...

I want a pump swap record now!

I'll get started on pulling it hopefully this weekend...if I run into a snag please check this post and help!!!

Is reseal kit DGK 121 something I can get locally?

Sounds good. The seal kits are usually found at shops that specialize in rebuild and repair of pumps. Otherwise they come up on eBay every so often.

I bought one Wednesday from my local bosch dealer. I found them by calling my local cummins dealer (Cummins Northwest) who refered me to them.

$18.98+tax locally, better than the price on flea-bay...

Thanks for the tips.

So no better time than now to do the 3200RPM spring, turn the fuel pin, and time it to the head a little when I put it back together? I'd like to leave the fuel settings on the pump alone - would that work?

One thing at a time, besides doing a governor spring. One thing to help you when you pull the top, it really helps to remove the fuel screw to relieve pressure on the lever assembly...otherwise it can be a pain to get back on. It can be done without that, but for me, it works. Loosen the jamb nut just enough to free the screw and rotate the screw and nut assembly as one out all the way. This will help with getting it back in close to where it was before on assembly.

This might sound like a dumb question, but when I turn the engine so the key is at 12 and I pull the pump...even if I spin the pump while its out as long as I don't turn the engine anymore and line up the key with the gear when I put it back in then I haven't messed up timing right?

Also, do I need the gear puller or is there another method?

correct. and you will need a puller of some sort to pop the pump off the gear since its tapered.

Ok thanks. I'll look for one of those bar style gear pullers this week.
