CB Setups

Postby oldestof11 » Sat Sep 03, 2011 9:15 am

Looking to see who has CB's and how you have them setup. I am looking to do this as I have 3 CB's from my uncle who is a truck driver but also looking at the Cobra 19 and 18. I want the 18 for the NOAA channels...

Also, looking to see how you guys did antennas too!

Thanks!

I honestly have no pics of my own setup, as I have no CB, but I've seen where people mount them above a single DIN stereo in place of a Double DIN. I'm getting a little tired of my factory Double DIN never working, but have never really been a fan of the plastic adapters that just take up all the room that was there.

My only worry would be the heat from the two causing one or the other to burn up in that tight space.

I'll look around for some pics of the setup once I get in from the garage.

I screwed mine right to ceiling. I've seen them centered, but I had mine between the driver side visor and headliner. As for antennas, I made some 90deg mounts and put them in the front stake pockets.

We have company radios of some sort that use a really low profile screw on the bottom of the antenna. My dad has his on a 90* mount opposite his FM antenna on the hood.

Dunno if there's some sort of low profile CB option like that, but that's where I would prefer to run one if I could.

EDIT:

Here's a pic of what I mean with the Single DIN stuff:

I have a Stryker 497 10 meter radio. Its mounted to the front of my console. Here is a Pic on a Uniden mounted in that location till it died.

I am using a set of Wilson Flex 4 antenna's with gumball mounts. Here is a pic of them. Look real close by the headache rack on the flatbed.

I haven't used a cobra 18. I gave a model 29 LTD away not to long ago. It had the worst recieve of any radio I have ever owned. The only other cobra I had I threw it out a window at 60 MPH. So I am not a big cobra fan.

Philip, do you have a HAM license? How hard was it to get?

Taco, I am thinking of something like that...

I am torn. I will take what you say into consideration Philip but it seems like the Cobra 18 is a nice unit and the 29LTD with Bluetooth. They are not only good bang for the buck, but easy to set up...

Rumble, what kind of antennas?

If you buy a COBRA, try and buy an older Phillipean unit. If you do a little work, they are good little raidos. So are Galaxys and Connexx. I run a Galaxy 99.

I have a mildly modded Uniden PC 78 ltd with a K40 . I mounted the antenna to the passenger mirror and the CB on the dash right above the shifter. I don't have pictures.

No I do not. As long as you don't go playing in those other channells. There is very little issue. There are many 10 meter radio's on the roads today.

Just do your home work and do a google search for the brand radio your looking at. Fnd Cb forum's. You can learn alot about any model.

The first question to ask about any model. Receive quality. Very few people have the mike keyed all the time. So receive quality is an issue. That 29 I gave away. Had very poor receive. Whenever anyone would break the squelch setting their transmission always had static going over the top. I got tired of that real fast. I replaced that 29 with a Uniden PC78. It had a lot better receive. It got out as far as the cobra. It was also cheaper than a cobra.

The Uniden lost a board after a couple of years. I replaced it with a Connex 3300HP while the Uniden was being repaired. Let me tell you. Those blue LED's in a connex will light the whole inside of a 1st gen at night. It doesn't matter which way its mounted.

That Uniden died again this spring. That when I went to the Stryker.

That connex is mounted in a brief case. I use that when I am driving something that doesn't have a CB in it.

I have been reading reviews on the Cobra's and they claim there is no difference between any of them. Kind of like our fuel inlet pressure. Everyone says less than 15psi or you will blow your seal. I ran 17psi constant and spikes up to 20psi and it still held.

Philip, I will be doing more research. :alien:

Well... I bought a Cobra 29 WX NW ST. I have read reviews upon review and forum after forum. The new 29s are very nice units. As long as the antenna is decent quality then RX should be fine. I am using this mostly for long trips and weather. For the money on the setup, availability of replacements, and warranty, I do not think I could have done better.

I was looking at 10 meters and could not justify the price. I may kick myself later but I did it.
